Failed CA smog test; high HC at idle

1976 L48 odometer reads 70K+ (not sure if it rolled over) - Edlebrock Performer intake - new distributor/cap, plugs, EGR, carb rebuild by SMI, all in 2016, 3K mi. since - not sure most recent oil change, think it was 3/2018 - mostly highway miles, 3K MSL give or take (high desert), usually 16mpg...

    not weird brake thing

Yes! After much delay, I finally finished this small project! I was having trouble bleeding everything, and got the dreaded "soft pedal". Several attempts and methods (gravity, two-man, vacuum) were employed, along with a quart of fluid, yet I just couldn't get the air out. Last year I had...

    not weird brake thing

I picked up a new master cylinder at Napa for $42: http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx/Brake-Master-Cylinder-New/_/R-NMAM1974_0332904492 Unlike the photo, the one in the box has bleeders, which will help with bench bleeding, but makes me wonder if it's O.K. for my car...

    not weird brake thing

Aargh! Well, it's taken me awhile, but everything's back together (front calipers rebuilt with O-ring conversion, new soft lines at all 4 corners, master cylinder back on). After bench bleeding the master cylinder, and both gravity and "2 person" bleeding the system, I have a soft pedal...

    not weird brake thing

Now doing the fronts . . . . . . after a year has passed. I forgot to take some pics from when I finished up the rears, but I did the same thing for the fronts. Here's what they look like now (with the before for contrast): Check out the bolts holding on one of the calipers (with new...

    He's at it again

You may have seen video of Brodie Smith doing a number of trick shots with a Frisbee; well, here's some more: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hc2stdqp7KQ Mike

Is the fuel line supposed to do this?

Maybe it's to prevent siphoning: After it goes over the frame, it goes up over the corner of the control arm, then wraps around underneath and heads back to be clamped onto the hardline. Also, is that the input line or return line? Thanks, Mike

    Upgrading/Relocating Fuse Box

I replaced the headlight switch in my '76, and no longer have dash lights or tail lights. Research indicates it's likely a bad ground somewhere. I did have to replace a fuse, which was a pain to get out. While checking the fuses, I noticed some corrosion on some of the prongs in the fuse box...

Brakes, this time on my Saturn

2000 LW1(wagon) The front driver's rim is grinding on the brake caliper. Started recently. Stops when brakes are lightly applied, so I'm hoping it's a loose caliper and not the bearings (or something worse). Mike

    not weird brake thing

Yeah, I guess I shouldn't be too unhappy that there was a problem that forced me to get in there. It was the caliper with the problem, so as soon as I took the wheel off and saw it, I stopped the bleeding process, which the next step was to spray the bleeder with PB Blaster and let it sit for a...

    not weird brake thing

Is it true? While disassembling one of the calipers, I snapped off a bleeder. Am I screwed? Mike P.S. The before pics: The leaky culprit: Hopefully they'll look a lot better than this when I'm done:

    not weird brake thing

It was your thread that inspired me to try doing it myself: http://vettemod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2822&highlight=ring+calipers I have some of the cast metal color POR 15 that I'm going to use. Parts should be here Tuesday or Wednesday, so I'm going to start on disassembly and cleanup...

    not weird brake thing

Well, I went through the troubleshooting procedure and found that the driver's rear caliper is leaking. So, I ordered the o-ring kit from Mike at Classic Corvette Parts. :D I also found that my previous 20 inches of vacuum is now like 14 inches, so I need to troubleshoot that. :( Mike

    not weird brake thing

So I'm looking at rebuilding one or more calipers? Maybe I can get one of the people who have done that and made them look nice to do mine . . . Thanks, Mike P.S. Any recommendations on a source for either a kit or individual parts? I get the feeling this will turn into another Hydroboost...

    not weird brake thing

My pedal goes to the floor, with the motor running or not. Pumping several times doesn't change anything. With the motor running, when the pedal is pressed or released, motor RPMs surge briefly. The car has been mostly sitting for the last 6 months. Brakes have worked fine up until now...

    'Coupla Qjet questions

    1) Is this a divorced choke? 2) If so, can I use something like this to convert it to electric? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/jet-201355/ I have a new Edlebrock Performer intake to put on, and would like not to have to acquire and install new tubes (the old ones suck, plus I can't get...

    Bypassing the headlight switch rheostat

I broke my headlight switch. Since I'm still between jobs, I have lots of time and no money so I decided to take it apart and see if I could make it work. The plastic inside broke, and CA seems to be holding it together. Reassembly seemed to go O.K., with everything working except the dash...

Thinking about selling some silver coins

The last time I did this was the early 80's when they were going for 8X face value. Does anyone know the going rate for: 1) silver coins 2) clad half-dollars 3) uncirculated silver dollars 1987 I'm not looking for "graded" values, as I don't think anything I have would even make "Good", or...

Honda Center (the Pond) Anaheim parking tips?

I'm going to see "Roger Waters: The Wall Live" this Tuesday :yahoo: To give you an idea how long it's been since the last time I went to the venue, it was still called "The Pond". So, I was wondering if anyone had any parking secrets for ease of access, saving money, etc., that they'd be...

Anybody know anything about phones/phone lines?

My DSL works fine, and I can make calls to other people no problem. However, when someone tries to call me, they say it rings once, and then either they get a busy tone, or else nothing happens for about 5 seconds and then they get disconnected. I reported the problem, but the earliest a tech...
