Here's an interesting fact....back when they were getting ready to release the Pontiac GTO on the world (1964), they were testing transmissions for durability. And they tested ALL transmissions, not just GM. The test was brutal, to put it mildly. Much worse than anything most guys would do to their cars. Since you could get either a 3 speed stick (standard) or 4 speed stick (optional), both types of transmissions had to be tested. The test involved bringing the RPMs up to red line, then dumping the clutch and power shifting (without using the clutch pedal) all the way down the strip. In EVERY test the GM 3-speed transmissions failed miserably. So what did GM do? They installed a
FORD toploader 3-speed into the cars. Presto!!! No more transmission failures.
