Clinging to my guns and religion in KCMO.
Was digging around through some spare parts and I got to wondering what the weight difference was between bbc and sbc aluminum water pumps. I thought if the weight difference was significant enough I would entertain the idea of trying to adapt a sbc pump onto my bbc. I put each on my scale and only got about a 1.6# difference (5.8#, 7.4#). Boy, after making some adapters I'm speculating the net difference wouldn't be much. Oh well. I did notice that the stamped steel impeller cover on the bbc pump weighed 13 ounces. I grabbed a chunk of eighth inch aluminum of the same area and it weighed 5 ounces, for a half pound difference (not much, but it's way up front). I put a straight edge across the back of the pump and it cleared the impeller, so perhaps a simple lighter cover might work. However, it would have saved me some work if I had thought about this a couple years ago when I was putting the engine together.

Yeah, that's right. I occasionally see posts where he's talking about some rare old pieces. Something tells me those things are probably a pretty hefty $/lb weight reduction option.
