Not to be disagreeable, but why not build a 400hp engine? Mine is close now and probably will be at least that once I put the heads/FI on it. I don't race on the street but I'll get frisky when no one is around. As for someone else smacking it, is it really relevant how much power it has if someone else runs into you? Great thing about this country, at least for a little while longer, is "because I want to" is a perfectly valid reason for just about anything.

Oh you certainly have the right to build one and drive it on the street. You also have the right to drive it off a cliff if you so desire. Or save the car and give it to your wife and jump off a bridge by yourself. Ain't America great? :)

I just question WHY anyone would want 400-500HP to toot around town with? "Getting frisky" will also get you tickets. There are just too many cops around to not get them. And then UP goes your already astronomical insurance.

I certainly have nothing against building a 400-500HP engine. Heck, I am hoping to exceed that horsepower number on mine by a large margin. But NO WAY I am driving it on the street. Driving on the street is giving the cops a "shooting fish in a barrel" advantage. All they have to do is follow you and eventually you will "get frisky" and then you get your ticket. WHY give them that opportunity? To race a Mazda or a Toyota? C'mon, be serious. You can drive to the dragstrip and beat the crap out of your car all day long and never have to worry about tickets or higher insiurance rates. AND you will be racing cars that are actually competitive. Of course, if you are independently wealthy, you won't worry about those tickets and insurance. But drag racing on the street and speeding tickets WILL eventually get your licensed revoked, no matter how much your bank balance is. Is it worth that?

Someone smacking it has nothing to do with horsepower, obviously. But someone smacking it could be YOU, if you lose control while doing "performance driving" on the street and smash it up. If I had a nickle for every time that happened, I could tell Uncle Sam to keep his social security. :)

I don't know Dep, buddy of mine up north here has a 427 SB utting out 550 hp through a tremec and has only been stopped once in the last couple years

I dont see why not DJ.
Just look at the hp ratings in the newer cars, you can get a Mustang GT with Coyote engine comes with 412 hp, a Shelby will 550 hp out of the box.

ZR1 with 638 hp, theres a whole lot of over 500 hp out there.

Ok talk old cars, how many are installing LS engines with over 500 hp's in older cars?
Just look at build threads in protouring and lateralG.

Like Quick502 said... just because!

Hell I wonder why they sell motorcycles that can run 194 mph in a very short distance (Hyabusa) to anybody that barely can drive them.

You can still get a ticket for driving "frisky" with a 300 HP motor... Its the driver that needs to be de-tuned for street driving.
Think about it... Build a 5,6,7,800 HP motor for your race car, then have another car with a more docile motor for just street use? Or build one car that can kill two birds with one stone that only needs a driver mod for street use.

Same goes for a great handling car... People dump tons of money to make a street car handle like its on rails. Cruising the local twisties is more dangerous than straight line "frisky" street driving IMO

While I dont promote street racing or other aggressive street driving, I dont mind rowing through the gears from a stop light or taking my favorite on/off ramp a little faster than a Suburban as long as I am not endangering anyone else. There are far more dangerous things one could be doing

Currently building a 500+HP street 406 for my fathers '55 chevy, and constantly modifying my street vette for better handling BTW

My LSx 6.0 is 400hp (stock), and gets twice the gas milage, and is more reliable than the old 350hp small block.
Perfect manners on the street.
As for street racing, forget it. In MO you can get a manslaughter charge if you're street racing and even the other driver gets in a fatal accident.

I was with you until you put "SB" in it.

It's just a matter of time. There are a LOT of desloate areas when I live too, but you usually can't see the radar planes. ;)

I resemble that remark! I HAD a Hayabusa back in 2003. Best description I can give for it is "scary fast". Want to check the totals on idiots who bought sportbikes and DIED or got seriously mangled on them? That is WHY insurance for them is either unobtainable or so expensive that you need to win the lottery to pay it. They belong on the track, NOT on the street.

The VERY FEW people who can AFFORD those new cars aren't beating the crap out of them on the street. Most of them are collectors or rich young (or old) men who buy them as an investment. Yeah, you will see Mustang GTs or Camaros and Challengers with dual exhaust on the street, but they aren't the red hot versions. And don't think cops don't "key in" on those cars and watch them more closely than regular cars. The temptation to "get on it" if it is a young person driving usually overrides the common sense. Instant ticket.

Heck, you can install a jet engine in a car "just because". Doesn't mean you should drive it on the street. Spending a small fortune, and it DOES take a small fortune to build a fast car, just to drive it at 35 MPH and pick up a bag of groceries makes ZERO sense. The SOLE REASON to build a fast car is to DRIVE IT FAST. And the ONLY place you can do that safely is AT A TRACK.

Horsepower limits for the street. Dep, I didn't know you were a left wing liberal.:rofl: What should the limit be there green peace buddy? 50? 100HP? 200HP? 300HP?:smash::smash::smash:

Nope, not advocating that at all. I am a far right Tea Party Patriot. I simply see no purpose or logic in spending a fortune to make a car go extremely fast where there are SPEED LIMITS. :banghead:

Hey, who's the eco-aware regulation-loving liberal now?
I guess freedom includes the right *NOT* to be rational.
Now, if you excuse me, got to work to pay for all the gas I'll burn someday.

Geez! I actually agree with Dep on this one! As has been said, its a free country; you build as much HP as you want but the whole thing seems to be just a status thing for a lot of people. How much HP will you really be able to enjoy on the street? In the time I have been on the forums there have been several instances where guys have built megamotors only to lose it and crash their pride and joy soon after the build. If thats what you want to do with your money, thats cool. I just think many times its for bragging rights more than any other value.

Well said.

Ok then, this whole "hot rodding" culture thing thats been going on since the second car was produced is all bogus?
it needed to be faster than the first.

Neither do I, so lets remove the speed limits....seriously, really....

Unfortunately they repaved a very ancient much patched up yellow striper street into this burb here, about a mile long, and of course the idiots laying out the joint 40+ years ago, put this stupid elementary school on the main road, just to be dumb, instead of setting it off to the edge of the development like would be logical....for traffic control reasons....

so anyway, there have been 4 sets of rumble strips in the road since I been here 15 years now, and they had some thankful failures in them, so if I picked my path, I could avoid the worst of them.....well as any driver worth a flip knows, the faster you go, the better on the car...

so these new ones are much worse and of course the nazis had to install the POS car destroying crap, as if any 6 y/o kid dunno not to run into the street....SO we tried back routes through to get around the main feeder, another mile or so outta the way, too many stop signs, so I tried something....

HIT that road at nothing less than 30 mph and the vette is fine, of course it's marked 15 during skool times....it's such a cluster **** then it don't matter if it was 2 mph...all them damn minivans and mommies....how about we take child molesters out back and shoot them? so the mommies can let the kids walk like MY old ornery ass used to do?? too boot I used to be a school safety patrol, one of the kids with a belt.....:goodnight:

SO to find that road is still marked 25 mph, instead of 35 like it SHOULD be....

so to avoid the time of day travel.....and hit them bumps at 30-35 mph, and it's actually not bad on the car....thanks Bilstein.....

:1st:

trick IS what to do about the other vehicles....200k miles on the Escort, tire wear normal, suspension tight, wonder what that tactic would be on that car, Miata is a '91 tons of fun for her to drive, not rusted out, so wonder what the best tactic is for her....

always summfin....:1st: but then again, WTF else to do??:flash:

Witch is why I never wanted a mega engine, why? gas belongs at a buck a gallon if our damn .gov would GTF outta the way, maybe 1.50 at MOST....

still don't see it, but if ~350' lbs+ can't move the freight good enough on the street, why bother??...this coming from a guy who used to drive a '73 Grandville convertible...550 ft lbs at idle 273 posi rear, 5500 lbs of rolling steel....THAT car was much hated by the ex/kids' mom which is why I love the thoughts after it so much....:rofl: maybe it's because I drove it like a 'sports car'????

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

I was just thinking about this recently. There is a practical limit of how much HP is going to help you in a redlight to redlight situation. With my paltry 300hp and 4:56 gears i can hang with most street stuff till about 40-50 mph, then their big hp comes on and they leave me like i hit reverse. The limit is how much traction a tire can put down and unless someone is running sticky drag radials on the street my 295/50s can do as well or better than most street cars. Hell the new mustangs with 415hp run wimpy 255 tires.

There are not that many high speed contests going on any more. So as long as the "race" doesn't go high speed i can look like i'm bad ass.

Like everything else these HP wars are like comparing penises.

I couldn't resist posting to this thread. See #116. I still can't believe people build engines with 400-500Hp to drive ON THE STREET!!!!:eek::eek:

You mean GM, Ford, Chrysler, BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, etc...not to mention Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini?

I can get a ticket for getting "frisky" with the 132 or so HP on tap in my little bitty BMW...surprisingly peppy little bugger for the low HP rating. I wouldn't be surprised if the numbers are on the conservative side.

If we let them drill anywhere, deregulated, and gave them subsidies, it would'nt drop a red nickel. Give thet idea up Gene.:bonkers:

Depends on cost of production/bbl......last I heard was with honest currency not all inflated is that the oil companies could frack that freeking oil HERE and do off shore for ~1.50/gal so even if the figgers I hear are rong, and it's 2 bux....that's all it's WORTH.....

we are screwing ourselves with this boutique fuel and in general ALL the EPA ********.....time to drop the hammer on the weenies....long since....

:flash:

Nonsense, Jeff. Six years ago gas was between $3.50-4/gallon, couple years later, it was below $2.50. Prices do come down sometimes.
I doubt we'll ever see it below $2/gallon any more. All the easy stuff to get has been got. No sense spending the money/time if they can't sell it for a profit. I don't blame them for that, I sell my product/time for a profit. No margin, no mission.

Back to the topic at hand, in our local club we have a young guy who built a 550hp (700hp on the spray) c5. He drives it to and from work every day. But he also takes it to the track for "Midnight Mayhem" a couple dozen times a year. To my knowledge, he doesn't race it on the street, maybe just some "spirited" driving now and then. But he wanted the fastest street Corvette in town and I think he's pretty close. Something to be said for being able to drive your car to the track, lay down an 11 second 1/4 mile time, then drive it home, if that's your thing.
Dep, you know, I have guns, lots of guns, and lots of ammo. I could wage jihad against the musloids if I wanted, but I don't. My guns and ammo are there because I enjoy going out to the desert and killing rocks in a variety of ways. But I suppose with your rationale, I should only have one gun to go out target shooting because that's all I need. Right?

Definition of bogus: false; not genuine.

Nope. I wouldn't use that word. But just like our wonderful President, the hot rodding culture has EVOLVED. This is NOT the late 60s-early 70s. Those were the days of street racing and REALLY hot cars being driven on the street. Ask any of the old geezers on here who remember those days. There were guys driving full race strip cars on the street. The days of the Nickey Nova and Camaro, the Yenko cars, Ace Wilson's Royal Pontiac's super-tuned GTOs and Mr. Norms Grand Spaulding Dodge are GONE. Street racing is GONE. What you have now are super-expensive factory hot rods that most people can only dream about. The owners of those cars may "peel out" once in a while, but you won't see many of them at the dragstrip. There was a time when you could cruise to McDonalds or Burger King and ALWAYS find some hot rods in the parking lot who were looking for a race. That was before fast food joints made you get out of your car and come inside to eat. If you weren't around during those days, you missed a lot. Go watch "Amercian Graffiti" to see what the REAL "good ol' days" were. Compression ratios were 10-1 or higher. The really hot cars (L-88, 426 wedge Mopars, 427 Ford side-oilers) were 12 or 13-1. Those cars were FAST. Now we have 502 crate motors with 8-1 compression. Pffft...might as well have a 6-cyl. Those aren't hot engines. They are eco-friendly motors that run smooth on the crappy gas from the pump. You can thank your government and the tree huggers for killing off hot rods.

Me? I'm building a 427 big block clone of the L-88 for strictly track use. Including the high compression 12.5-1 pistons. No pump gas for me. But I have a few sources close to home that sell racing gas. It ain't cheap, but you gotta pay to play. ;)
