Converting VHS tapes

Anyone converting VHS tapes? I have a bunch that I want to convert and burn, what's the best way to go about it? I see cords on e-bay with hardware in the middle for sampling and I've read about just using software on the computer

A $80 DVD recorder should do..... no matter how you do it it's going to be "real time", a 2hr movie takes 2hrs to record, the reason why I never bothered converting anything to DVD....

Works - REAL TIME though - but makes for a chance to "qc" as you go along.
It would not do some copy protected material though. Great for "home movies" though!
