Vapor Canister?

The previous owner eliminated the vapor canister from my '73. Due to the garage smell issue, I've decided to install a new one. I've located and mounted a bracket but cannot find a new vapor canister. I have one on order with Willcox but they've been unable to obtain it and are getting word that it has been discontinued and may no longer be available.

I'm not concerned with originality, I just need a vapor canister that works properly and fits the bracket. Canisters are available for '74 to '77 cars. Would this model canister work for my application? Would there be a better choice?

I'll have to see if I can find that old one from the 69 and compare it to what came out of the 77 and the 82.
 
DC3 yes, in a shark you should use the vapor canister....along with a fully functional NON LEAKING fuel float valve on the driver's upper side of the fuel tank.....it nothing but a float ball to keep fuel out of the line going forward to the canister.....

NOW, having quoted the factory/EPA line......I have a dumb question, assuming the float valve works, and the line forward is fine, why not just plumb it into the induction above the throttle plates directly, and hell with all this canister/valve crap???

regrets but Delco did discontinued that can quite recently
since 70-73 all used the same can, they aren't that rare
make sure you get the snap on lower cap if you get a used can
the caps went disco long before the cans did
it kinda holds the filter in place

I would think Corvette Carlisle or BloomingCharles as a swap source or Fast Eddy probably has used, plus Contemporary Corvette or Pacific Corvette
 
I may have gotten lucky. I checked Amazon a couple of weeks ago with no success. Today while searching again I found the correct canister and it's in stock and sold by AC-Direct. The description is 1970-1973 Corvette Fuel Vapor Canister except SPHP. Part number is ACDelco 215-12 and says it replaces GM #: 17063011

I am a little concerned because although the photo and description are correct, when I click the link to verify it fits my car, I get a message that it does not fit and then it tells me its for a 2005 Cadillac which uses an entirely different looking canister. Hopefully this is just a problem with their fitment guide and I will receive the correct part. I'll know when it arrives.

I struck out. My order was canceled due to the part being no longer available. So, anyone know of another vapor canister that will fit and function on my '73? I need one with 3 connections - one to the tank, one to the PCV, and one to the carb.

I'll also give the local Chevy dealer a try. They may have a way to find one still in stock somewhere or know what would make a good replacement.

I think yours is a purge type. The tank vents into the canister all the time,when the engine is running the small hose going to the carb opens the purge valve and the PCV hose sucks the fume from the canister and burns the fumes. (Think I got that right.) Some years don't purge. I think a fit all type could be made to work easy enough.
How big are the hoses going to the carb and PCV , that should tell you what they are doing ?

Don't know. Previous owner pulled everything off and threw it away. I'm trying to put it all back to functional. Finally traced the garage smell to the line coming from the tank to the canister. He had left it open to just vent.

There was a thread discussing a vapor canister option awhile back but I can't find it now and can't even remember which website.

I'll bet you are right. Good find. However, I may have gotten lucky again. I did a Google search for the GM part number and came across an ebay ad for a vapor canister for 81-84 Firebirds, Lemans and Blazers. The detail also listed a bunch of older cars from the early 70's that it would fit. I contacted the guy and explained what I needed and he confirmed it would fit my Vette and offered to take it back if it does not.

So, I have one on the way again and the best part is the ebay price was the best I had found ($50 plus free shipping). He has two more if anybody needs one. For future reference, it is a Standard Motor Products CP1045.

Got the part today and it was the correct one. So is the O'Reilly one you found. While I was waiting for the part to come in, I used the enlarge button on the O'Reilly site and up came a few more pictures. The close up of the top of that canister clearly had the part number 17063011 stamped on it. That is the number that superseded the original for my '73 and fits '70 - '73 small blocks except for LT1s.

The ebay vendor ended up being RockBottomAutoParts.net. Great customer service.
