How hard is it to drill a cylinder head for an accessory bolt hole?

I would like to add a 88-91 nippondenso A/C compressor to my 82 but would need to drill a hole for its brace and tap and helicoil it. Can this be done easily without removing the head?

I know exactly what you talking about as I had iron heads on my engine at one time also....what I did was fashion a L bracket that went from the front intake bolt down to that bracket, and run a nut/bolt through it....

I had tried it without that bracket, and the aluminum fatigued and snapped, had to have it welded....

my heads were rounded in that area that you need, so drilling/tapping a hole was next to impossible for me, by change your heads are flat in that area it surely would be easier....but I have never tapped a hole in cast iron.....

Anyone know what the stock 82's heads chamber size was? I suppose I could find some L98 cast heads but they are I'm pretty positive 64cc chambers. Might be a good time to have them rebuilt and head gaskets done anyways. Heck might even be a good time just to rebuild the motor since it has been sitting for about 10 years. Last time it was driven though it did run good, well provided it isn't seized up now. I think in about 3 weeks I will finish the radiator and fans and serpentine conversion and see if it will start.

Tapping a stud in the car is hard enough. I would not even attempt to do that front hole in a car. No way Jose.

With an alignment sleeve it's very easy, just center punch where you want the hole, use a drill with a stop collar for depth and the sleeve to aim your drill.

All my radiator condenser stuff is out and removal of the radiator support would take 30 ,imutes and I would have easy access to this area.

The 82 heads pretty much suck if you want any kind of performance. If you're sticking with the factory injection, they're plenty. But the original heads are small chamber 1.84" intake valve heads. Find the L98 heads if you can.
