My project 81 has a narrowed ford 9" rear, any idea where I can get a fuel cell that will fit under the back in the stock location? i guess i will have to modify from there.

My '80 has a fuel cell mounted in the oem tank area, the fill neck does not line up worth a hoot.
The cell is 15 gallons and came from Jegs.
I bought the car in this condition, and have no further info :(

Summit and Jegs have plenty of fuelcells to choose from.... when you say "fit" - you're talking about overall size or position of the filler neck ?

really concerned with the filler neck lining up. I have seen everything that the race catalogs have to offer and nothing looks "right". I just thought that maybe there was a company out there making fuel cells specific to the c-3 corvette. I found nothing looking online. If not i will just get crafty and make my own, just wanted to make sure that I had explored all the options before ordering a bunch of aluminum to start my own.

you know I thought that was a typo when i first saw the price. For that kinda money I will certainly build my own. i was thinking that If I could fine something in the 300-500 range it would be worth it to purchase one. I am basically looking to get a big rectangle tank that the input will align with my stock fuel door. I have built several fuel cells in the past without a problem, but it is time consuming to say the least. I think I had 40 hours in my last one. That was mostly fab and tig time, then pressure testing.

Some years ago my welder buddy TIG'd up a ~200 gallon boat tank from aluminum stock and some solid internal baffles/braces for another friends' boat....

the requirements are obviously different, but it took Johnny about a week to do it, part time in the evenings after working all day....

I always thought a box that contains fuel was a fuel tank and a bladder in a box was a fuel cell.

1991 I built my Dad an auxiliary fuel tank that fit under the tool box that was mounted across the front of his pickup box.

I tig'd it, building it with 304ss. I purchased a tank at the wrecking yard and used the submersible pump, fuel sender and tank mounting ring assy which was welded into the ss tank.
I put 2 baffles in it each 1/3 of the way from the ends. the baffles had a 90 degree break in both the top and bottom edges. The baffles were mounted so that there was 1/4 inch clearance top and bottom.

I plumbed it into the oem tank fuel lines and added an additional solenoid valve and switch. The oem gauge read which ever of the 3 tanks he was running on.

The tank held 46 gallons which really helped to extend his fuel range. Still got 6 mpg but he didn't have to fuel up in little towns with high prices.

The guy that did the boat tank happened to stop over this afternoon, and so I mentioned this post....

he took HUGE issue with the term 'diamondplate' for that tank material...it was NOT that....it was some other aluminum based material that I dunno about...but suitable for the job....

so I stand corrected...put my 200 gallon recollection was confirmed...

Probably the cheapest and easiest to simply buy one from Summit/Jegs and the cut the filler neck out an reposition it to where it needs to be.

This is definitely one option for me if my tank starts leaking. A buddy bought a repro tank for his '78 and the fit was horrible, no coating inside the tank either... $250 plus shipping.... the aluminum fuel cell seems to be a good alternative

fuel cell
–noun
a device that produces a continuous electric current directly from the oxidation of a fuel, as that of hydrogen by oxygen.

Your right I can't build that, But I can build a well constructed, baffled foam filled, sumped, proper inlet positioned, proper shape and size fuel containment device for my corvette that will stand up to the most anal tech. inspectors gaze. done it several times in the past.Oh and by the way, you have no idea what I am capable of doing.

:push: THAT may bee, but I curious as to just what he has in mind, I know nothing of racing fuel cell construction....and have been rather concerned, but not HUGELY about the basic stock '72 tank in my car....

there is no spare tire either....some discussion of that being a impact barrier....

course this '72 is SO lo compared to most all the jacked up POS on today's roads...any bumper/spare tire is not going to be effective with something 3' off the ground....
