So, how hard is it to change out?
Any tricks?
I don't think I have ever done this in a complete car.(That I remember). LOL

I don't see what the hard part is, it can be a little PITA to get to the back of the gauge from under the dash. Remove the seat and you can lay on your back under the dash. Watch out for the oil press gauge line.

Unhook the cable from the dist first, attach a light bungy cord to the dist end, using a long screwdriver covered in tape , remove vent duct,go almost straight up and depress the clip and hold, the bungy will pull the cable back beyond the clip (if you have another person they can take the place of the bungy.
Below is my cable tool that slides up the cable and releases the clip, patent pending.

Nice tool but the drive cables are the screw on type on a 69

Thank You but are you referring to a 69 VW ?

Now I'm completely confused. The original post is asking about removing a 1969 Corvette tach cable (screw in type). Is this tool for a VW?

I know the later ones like the 81 are held in with a clip like that. I don't know when they changed.

My '72 is a speedo clip, I think the tach was too, as I remember....but it was a early outta there, 15 years ago....'75 electronic, which is now starting to flicker once in a while....

:surrender:

My 68 is a screw in type. Another 68 only part?

I was just joking with TT because he said the 69 (did not specify car manufacture)has a screw on type cable which is false unless he was referring to a 69 VW which does have a screw on cable. 68 was the last Corvette with screw type.
69 - 82 is clip type
Tool fits 69-82 Corvette

Why does the 69 vette I have here have the screw type? It's the original gauge set, it's an easly 69 though but the tach is original, still had the original tach drive dizzy and it's the correct redline or the 390HP big block.

Don't know. I'm unfamiliar with how vetts get over seas. Is this a US originally vette or one made to ship out of the US ?
Pics of the car ,gauge set,dash,under-hood and so on would be nice, maybe its a 68 titled as a 69.
Personally I have never seen a 69 with screw on cables and I work on some pretty early 69s.

It's a 69, there's not a thing 68 on it.
Except the cables :crylol: Sorry I couldn't resist. If I have time I'll start a thread and see if anyone else has a 69 with screw ons. Maybe you have a rare car. :shocking:

Using the last 5 #s 06895 its a Nov 68 build date. I've been in contact with guys with Oct 68 build dates and their cars have clip type cables. No one with a 69 has said they have seen screw ons in a 69. Oh well kids are born everyday out of wedlock and we still love them. ;)

Not sure what you have going on with that car. The VIN is a little crazy , 2 of the digits don't follow the book I have.
