Searched for some info online but have struck out so far. Looking for how the LS series engine thermostat/housing works. Does it combine the radiator cooled fluid with water jacket fluid to prevent thermal shock, or does it just allow the radiator coolant straight into the engine?

Thanks,
Mike

Essentially a 2 way thermostat, with the bypass pressure operated.
When cold, it fully recirculates engine coolant.
Under normal conditions, it combines hot engine coolant with cool radiator coolant depending on coolant pressure.
Under hottest conditions it uses only cooler radiator coolant.
With the tstat full closed it takes about 5psi to open the bypass, with the tstat fully open it takes more than 10 psi to open the bypass. There is also a bleed hole in the center of some of the bypasses. Bypass is always closed unless opened by pressure diff.
Yes, one purpose was to greatly reduce thermal shock and temp swing.

Wouldn't drilling 3....3/16 holes in the thermostat skirt serve the same purpose??, as well as having the heater hoses in constant recirc, heater core in use or not?? like I have this crossover L98 style plumbed permanently into the heater return at the pump....seems to me that solves any problems related to that on any engine....

NO??:fishing:

OK, what is different between LS and SBC generation engines in the plumbing department???

computer controls? water flow??
