LS1 Swap for an 82

All of these electrical speedos must be calibrated, that's when the pulse signal from the VSS is critical. I remember I got roughly 3600 pulses per mile, not enough for the Stewart Warner speedo, that needed at least 4000 pulses per mile. My speedo was 10% (400 pulses) short .... the AutoMeter speedo takes anything from 1000-200000 pulse to calibrate, pretty much anything....

With 3.08 gears in the C3 the Stewart Warner speedo might work fine, with those gears you get more driveshaft revolutions per mile than I got with my 3.55 gears

63360" = 1 mile
63360/84.82 (wheel circumference with 27" tire)= 747
747 wheel revolutions per mile
747/3.08= 242
=> 242 driveshaft revolutions per mile
242X 17 pulses per revolution (VSS signal)= 4114 pulses per mile

That's with the VSS that came with my TKO, no idea what's in the T56

As far as I remember a different VSS to make the SW speedo work was like $140 or so... since the AutoMeters are cheaper I just bought those.... the entire instrument conversion was close to $600 so that was bad enough with the cheaper AutoMeter stuff...

Was yours calibrated by pressing the trip reset button, driving X miles and then pressing the button again?

Based on this formula I should be above 4000 pulses with my gear ratio. I started thinking about the instrument cluster. The 82 has the plastic PCB. I might have to be a little creative working around the ckt board to change the speedo. I have a spare PCB I could test the waters with.by making jumpers. Vettesuki made his from cluster from plywood.

I saw a electrical to mechanical conversion while looking at the LS conversions earlier. Pricey at 300.00, but an option.

yes, you press the button, drive exactly 1 mile and then hit the button again... done.... seems to be pretty accurate as I have not received a speeding ticket yet...

I ordered my engine mount brackets & Fuel Rail covers today. When I get the engine mounts in, I will start test fitting the motor. Once that is in I can start mounting the accesseries to see what will fit. Will have have a problem with the new alternator wiring. I think I read that it puts out 140 amps. The old one is around 80.

Which engine plates did you order? Do we know which trans you decided to use? Getting the units bolted in will be a straight foreword task. You'll then have to figure out a few minor challenges like the alt wiring, kickdowns and stuff. I'm waiting for details of how you decide to handle the heater hose outlets.

I ordered my engine swap plates from Summit. They were made by Trans-dapt. Plates with new motor mounts were 54.00 plus shipping. I went with Summit in case I had installation problems. There are several compainies that I know nothing about. I went ahead and ordered the Red Fuel Rail covers while I was at it.

I am still checking on the 4L60E that I have. Looks like I would have to replace the converter & bellhousing to use it. I might just sell it & pick up the correct one.

The water pump will have to be modified for the heater hoses. I will probably need to see how much clearance I have to make the right decission. The nipples will come out pretty easy, but I will probably tap in some threads to reroute the fitting. One option might be using some hydraulic hose that will clear the control arm. I will just have to wait and see.

Update,

I got my engine adapter plates in and installed. Also got the motor painted & installed my new Fuel Rail covers mounted. I also picked up a set of four 98 Camaro service manuals of of Ebay. Now I can start gathering info on the wiring changes that will have to be made to adapt the old & new.

I should start pulling my 82 motor by next weekend. Then the fun begins.

Here some pics.

I wish I had onea those on a stand, I'd be flyin' at it too. Gotta start lookin' around for one I guess. Keep us posted on the trans and vss.

I'm pretty sure I will wind up going with a 4L60E tranny. I don't think that the 700R4 will combined with the 82 VSS will produce enough voltage for the 98 PCM. Reading up on the 4L60E VSS, it produces from 1 to 100 volts based on speed. The cost will be a bit higher, but probably less trouble overall in the end.

The 98 F-Body service manuals I bought this week, have a lot of detail that will be usefull in the swap.

Alright, in my search for info maybe someone can jump in here if I'm wrong. I understand obd1 systems look for a 2 wave vss [2000 pulses per mile] and obd2 systems look for a 4 wave signal [4000 pulses per mile]. When I converted my '65 to TBI I was able to buy a speedo cable driven [at the trans] 2 wave vss. There is [I seem to remember] an electric doo-dad that drives a speedo cable and provides a 4 wave signal available but it was stupid costly. Most obd2 4 wave systems are electric speedo/vss deals. How does this all sound so far? So what would I use to run an obd2/LSx engine in my car with the Muncie? Does anyone know if there's an aftermarket speedo that provides the 4 wave signal? Am I on the right track here?

I would think that there is something out there. You bring up a lot of good points, that is why I am going with the 4L60E to minimize the trouble I might run into. I will look for a possible option why researching my info.

Looks like I am going to put this project on hold for a while. I am going to have the neck worked on a couple of days after Christmas. I know If I start now, I will be out there trying to work on it with a neck brace. It will be to tempting to have something to do. This will make the 3rd time, I hope it's the charm.

OH shit Herb, what happened?? I have arthritis in my whole skeleton, and attnedant pains in the neck, which I do my best to pass on, but that all THAT much....what they doing???
years ago I knew a lady in a neck brace from a whiplash getting rear ended....

I think about adding head supports to my vette seats every once in a while for just that reason....

best of luck man....take care....

I fell about 27 years ago. They wanted to do surgery then, but I would not let them. I actually forgot about what caused all of my problems, until the nurse at work reminded me after reading my files. Anyway after 2 surgeries it getting worse again. They are going to fuse disk C3 - C7 on both sides of the neck. The pain has gotten very bad lately making me miserable to be around. I bought the 08 the other day for a better ride, & it is killing me after riding in it. Things could be alot worse compared to other people in these trying times. I am gratefull for what I have, & I will get threw it one way or another.

Thanks for asking,

Herb

Herb, you gotta be kidding man, you TOO?? long about 80 or so, I was sailing a 20' boat with some friends, the ex was preggers with first miscarriage, and so she stayed home....I hopped up to clean some lunch trash papers outta the boat, while it was on the trailer, deck shoes went right out from under me....I fell backwards on the tarmac from about 5' up.....landed damn nearly flat, smack on my backbone...only thing I recall is my HS gym teacher always shouting about 'in a fall, tuck your head'....so my neck took the shot, and I was knocked out a few seconds or so, Larry and Julie thought I was dead....

my neck not really much right since then, pain in the neck, but that's the least of it......

about 6 months after that, my asshole got infected, seems the shock had a split the shit tube just above the anus.....

so the surgeon put it back together again.....and in the recovery room with my ass in a sling he says 'parts of you are perfect now, anyone ever questions, drop your pants and show your scars'.....I start laughing and it hurt like HELL.....bastard.....I think it was to check his stitches with..put a strain on them before I was allowed to eat....

Herb, take care man, I know about crappy skeletons....I want a transplant when the .gov pays for it....

Gene,

Socialism is just around the corner. I am going to ahead and get it done this year due to meeting my out of pocket deductable on the insurance. After the surgery, the total on the neck for this year will be around 100K or better. Insurance will cost me an extra 10% next year from 90% to 80%.

Least you have insurance, I have not had a dime's worth of coverage for a damn thing since '90 at the divorce.....

not spent but about 2 grand since then on health care....lucky I guess....
at least my ass was covered ....once....

so come April I turn 65 and supposedly I get some coverage for hospital bills....but not signing a damn thing about paying anyting not covered....

Best of luck to you,....
