This new guy caught my attention today. I apologize for the picture quality, I had the zoom maxed out and I was shaking. Hopefully I can find my tripod and get some better shots in the future.

Then he flew to the ground, a little harder to see now.

These are obviously Birds of Prey. I have a Miniature Pinscher who weighs in at about 13 pounds, do I need to worry about her or is she big enough to take care of herself?:hunter::club:

Looks like an owl...they are good to have around. They are looking for little snakes and rats/mice. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I agree, it is an owl, a fledgling judging by the white downy feathers. Also he is spending a lot of time on the ground, I guess trying out his wings and hunting too.

Cool critter to have around, he'll keep the vermin down. Your pooch should be ok.

Unless that particular breed of owl grows to the size of a pelican...

It looks like a great horned owl (my best guess) be careful because they have been known to be aggressive and dive bomb. Also if they are really hungry they will attack and kill a small dog.

Agree......thats a young great horned owl. I raised one from a chick years ago. It's a good bird to have around for rodent control.

damn...that rat got big ears :)

OK, you probably know this already---Chihuahuas were bred to be 'ratters'. Small enough to go down rat holes and vicious enough to kill them. That's why they're such ankle biters--they don't know they're tiny, just that they are defending their clan.

A man has no better companion than a good dog, of any size.

:)

(I'm feeling sentimental right now--Big Ace the Wonder Dog had dental surgery yesterday which turned into a much bigger job than they had thought it would be. The doctor had expected it to be only an hour, quick & simple, but he ended up being on the table for over 6 hours. He's having a real hard time today, and I'm staying home to take care of him. Fuck work, my dog is hurting. For all he does for me, I can take care of him when he's down without a moments doubt.)
