Every Saturday morning a bunch of us old guys get together to do a Bible study thing with coffee and doughnuts...6:00A.M. sharp.
I started to grab a parking place and decided to on one a little closer so I shifted into reverse. the car sputters and dies. After 20 seconds of cranking it sputters to life and I give it a good romp to expell the loaded up gas. I park it and shut off the lights......pass side goes down, drivers side stays up??? I get out and go into the building for about one hour and 20 minutes. Bible study over and I get in the Vette and start it up....The driver side headlight goes down??. I turn on the lights and both doors come up...shut off the lights and both doors go down...as they should. No more problems for the rest of the weekend.
I noticed the car is erratic on idle. Normal idle is 750rpm in gear...1000rpm in park or neutral. Now is seems to be 750 in gear...14-1500 in park or neutral. I notice since warmer weather has arrived it likes to stay on fast idle and I have to give it a romp to kick it down to normal.
The Vette is a 78 350 L-82 Qjet with Auto trans. It does have a thumper cam but I have no other info on the engine. The carb has been gone through??? This is a 53000 mile Vette and has been taken care of. It's a nice car that has escaped abuse. Everything on the car has always worked great except this sudden load -up of fuel. I've owned it about three years.
The car did load up with gas a couple of times before the carb rebuild and I hadn't had any problem with it until now. It did the same thing as before rebuild. What about that odd vacumn display on the headlight doors?

Any ideas or comments?
Thanks....Alex

Hi Alex, so what where you studying?

I'm sure you will get a more technical explanation from some of the other guys on here but in simple terms, you gotta leak in your vacuum headlight system and/or a pinched line, i.e. could have an old line collapsing when it gets hot. More than likely could be the control valve. Another leak point is the old reserve canister if you have one.

System is not hard to chase down issues. I just went through dang near the same thing. Replaced one up/down plunger and also a control valve, DO NOT need two. Idle was crazy bad in erratic. $100 and an hour later I'm good.

Believe me, before I head out in my 82, especially on Tuesday on the Hot Rod Power tour, there is a lot of prayer! Amen?

Hope I have helped you.

Hi tt, thanks for the reply.
We are presently studying the early bible scholars and trying to get into their heads and see what they were thinking. Hmmm, they were just a wild back then as we humans are today......"nothing has changed" !!

Hey bigbird...I don't need you to make me dizzy, I can do a bang-up job of that all by my self...haha. I have all the books, manuals, and forums at my disposal. Up until now I never went close to the vacumn diagrams but now I guess it's my turn to get MY head into it. Between the info I have at my disposal and the "BREAK FLUID" in my fridge I shouldn't have any trouble........??? I'll start with the check valve first or maybe a whole new system is in order...I'll see .

Thanks alot guys....Alex
P.S...I'm open for more comments fellas.
