Here is a picture of the starter solenoid inside. The post on the left is the "batt" terminal, and the contact on the right is the "R" terminal.When engaged, the solenoid plunger forces a washer to contact both of these, supplying 12+ directly to the coil, bypassing the ballst resistor.
Although there is some wear on the "Batt" terminal, it is still usable. However, it would appear the "R" terminal is not making contact. This would cause hard starting, and possibly hard hot start.(Firing. Cranking is un affected)
