On my 81 I'm doing a lot of sanding and such around the rear at the moment and I often threaten the tacky worn out black trim around the rear window.

If I were to remove it would a local windshield shop be able to replace it?

Or is it held in by ancient dryed up rubber that would require a complete replacement? Can the modern guys even perform such a task cuz the guys that can do it on old Jags are dying off fast.

Should I just mask it off and hope for the best or is this best removed at this point?

The trim around the rear window is stainless, if you dent it you're pretty much screwed, they don't make any repros....
The trim is held in place by plastic retainers that will more than likely break when you pull the trim.
i have successfully removed the rear glass, then replaced all plastic retainers and re-installed the trim... I did however damage the trim on the driver side trying to push it into position (dent)...
Good thing I prefer it flat black so body filler and some paint will hide this mistake...

My advise, unless you really have to remove it (un-bonded glass for example) , leave it alone....

If it were me, knowing that a new body paint job masking could show around the molding would drive me nuts!
Knowing it would be a PITA, I would still remove it, restore/refinish and replace. The retaining clips should be available/replaceable.
But if you choose to leave it, it's possible to mask and refinish it in place.

I understand your interest in removing the glass and rubber molding. In the past I had a similar interest, until I discovered how much the rubber molding cost and the cost of installing the glass and any ancillary expense. Check everything out with your eyes wide open, before stripping it out.
