Clinging to my guns and religion in KCMO.
I can't believe how much time I'm wasting just trying to get the hood adjusted. I took it off over the winter when I had the body lifted up off the frame to tweak the bodymounts. In the past I've always just tightened/loosened/retightened a couple of the bolts and everything was fine, but this time I can't get the gaps to look worth a damn, and the hood looks like it's sitting at about a 5* angle towards the passenger's side. It should be a simple concept to get the hood sitting right (ie: sitting in the middle of that big hole), but it's giving me fits this time.

Just had to vent. Thanks for listening.

next time scribe a line around the hinge before taking it off

you're not the only one who is having issues... i smell like unburnt fuel and have tears in my eyes from it, damned camaro still idling too rich..single fire mode, tweaking maf tables..something is not right, int and blm skyrocketing. Blegh! and I also have no room to mount a coolant overflow tank... man, sometimes everything just fails

4x in and out from under the motor home for the 700 r4, finally works fine....

need pull the 200 4r out from the vette yet again, seems the friggin' lockup on the TQ no longer works....been some months, tried the simple shit, no go....

but I got those Magnaflow muffs underthere and working fine this afternoon, going to get welded down the road tmrw AM.....:yahoo:

as for hood hinges, try reverse hinging the thing, putting hood pins in front just for style, sure as hell not convenience....

I'm hearing your complains, right now I'm trying to adjust the doors, the front clip and the hood altogether, all coming from different donor cars....:suicide:

break the inner fender bonds, clean out the old cement, put in new and lay a heay cement bag or something on there so it dries with the 2 flush...only way to fix it.

That only works if the hood fits right in the first place. ;)

Mine doesn't - the curvature of the hood is lower than the fenders at a few points.

I was TOLD that the factory used rubber snubbs on the fender flange area to force the hood into alignment with the fender....about 1/3-1/2 of the way up the sides from front, play with hinge height via them shims, and then the hold down clamps near the cowling....

Here is one TimAT taught me. WHEN you have it perfect, before you take it off next time, drill a hole in the hinge and hood, and put a roll pin in the hinge. The dowel pin effect is great, and works like a charm.

I have used those, but believe they were aftermarket only. I dunno, but they do correct that issue with the least effort. The older hoods do sag there over time.

And THAT, is funny as all Hell.:smash::smash:

I have a removable tilt front end on my 73. Every time i take the front end off, the door gaps never line up the same when I put it back on!!! This is with no changes, as I pull the pins at the hinges; drives me crazy!

I did scribe a line, but for reasons I can't understand quite yet, it's still giving me fits. I'm thankful that the difficulty is this time rather than last time when I first installed the new hinges. I made the overall size a touch smaller to get rid of additional mass, and didn't have any installation/alignment problems. If I had this much trouble last time I would have blamed the hinges, and would have put the originals back on.

This was my first pass with the hinges. I cut a bit of the overhange stuff and finished the pivot pin after the picture was taken (final weight 3.2 ounces).

I'm heading back out to the shop to try my luck again. Once I get the hood to close, and change the oil, I think I'm ready for the next track day.

Chevy's method of dealing with body issues on the line (and they were numerous) was to glue everything as close as possible and grind it to shape. Sort of. My stock hood doesn't fit right, even with scribing lines around the hinges and being very careful during reassembly. The C4 was really the first Corvette built with anything approaching modern methods, and it took them several years of production to get the system standardized and working.
