Engine coolant circulation

If you are not getting heat as you should how do make sure the coolant is circulating in the system..?

Start the engine cold with the radiator cap off. When the thermostat opens, the hot water from the engine will go into the radiator and cold from radiator will go into the engine (if working properly).
