Dumb questions #23 and #24

All these decades,
it was a fine fitting fit for a flitting fairy....

:bounce::bounce::clobbered:

come on guyz, gimme a A for dramatic poetry, anyway....

Why Gene, I'm so proud of you... you are a poet at heart....
(really, that is good!)

Gene you are a poet.
But I am surprised, too. You don't have a drawer full of assorted fittings somewhere?

I would have lost that bet.. Sorry.

GM didn't use any funny sizes that I remember. If I was home I'd go pull the fitting and tell you what it is for sure. I'll be there Friday if it's any help.

No sweat Tim. I appreciate the effort. I think Paul nailed it at a 3/8 inch size. Possibly 5/16th, although I'm not sure they make a plug in that size. I'll hit Ace Hardware tomorrow and see what I can find. Worst case I'll buy everything in between and find what fits.

I measured the thread on my fitting that is sticking up from the mani...best I can see it is .670....which would be 3/8 NPT.

I have a 1/2 plug and a 1/4 plug...1/2 too large and 1/4 too small.

Funny....i don't have any 3/8NPT plugs:huh:

My bet is 3/8.

I wouldn't bet against that. I will know for sure tomorrow. ;)

And :1st: prize and a case of :mobeer: goes to Paul for the process of elimination. Went to Ace Hardware and they had 3 size plugs. 1/2 inch...I know that's too big. 1/4 inch, that was definitely too small, and 3/8 inch, which looked right and was the correct size. Now I need to buy some Permatex blue threadlocker to make sure when I install it it is sealed and doesn't corrode in place. Although brass normally doesn't do that.

The only thread locker I use is RED, because I really don't want problems, but for anything like that, use RTV, the good GE shit, or black by Permatex in the toothpaste size tube....no need to worry it coming looooose on you....

Just use plumbers pipe dope. You "might" want a vacuum gauge someday.

Yes. Just be sure to not suck any strands of tape in. Dope is a tad safer in that respect.

From their website:

Permatex® Medium Strength Threadlocker BLUE

OEM specified. All-purpose, medium strength threadlocker. Ideal for all nut and bolt applications 1/4" to 3/4" (6mm to 20mm). Eliminates need for stocking expensive lock nuts and lock washers. Locks and seals while preventing parts loosening due to vibration. Protects threads from corrosion. Removable with hand tools for easy disassembly.

I've used the blue on the bottom 2 baseplate screws on qjets...no problem removing the screws.

I've also used Permatex #2 non hardening when I needed a good seal...ie: differential drain plug(drilled and tapped on the bottom of the case).
