this is a Ford driveshaft, on the transmission output yoke is a balancer ring. Just like a crankshaft harmonic balancer, when the rubber is all dryrotted and cracked it can cause more harm than good.... as part of a drivetrain "upgrade" I decided to replace Ujoints and to get rid of this ring.

.

even though the rubber appeared to be cracked all the way the ring was not easy to remove - it resisted but at the end: I win :D

test drove it today: much smoother, less vibration......

GM LS1 F body shafts have that too, a balancer/hardy disc combo. I kept it, it really does help with vibration (but sadly the rest of the car is a rattle trap with solid mounts LOL )

Apparently these things work fine until the rubber cracks and deteriorates...... car is running smoother without it :D

Now, have to say, I replaced the U-joints at the same time so that might have improved the vibration too....

anyways, it's not going to hurt anything running without it ???? There are quiet a few replacement yokes available without the balance ring....
