C3- Will I fit?

Some of you may know me from other sites, the speed shop I used to work at... A long time ago I used to be pretty involved with the crossfire stuff, and on the original crossfire vault, but I've never owned a 'vette, I owned a crossfire powered '83 Trans Am.

Anyway, a C3 vette has always been on my short list of cars I must own some day, especially an '82 Crossfire car (what can I say, I had the TA running mid 13's at the track and getting 35-37mpg on the highway), but I'm looking out for an '80-82 that I like or possibly an early 70's if I find a good deal.

The thing is that you just don't see many of them around and looking around a little it's starting to look like it's going to be pretty likely I'll have to drive a few hours to get what I want, and I'm concerned: I'm kind of a big monkey, will I fit? Or, if it's going to be tight, can I do something to make it work?

How big? 6'4" and a little short of 300#. Most of my weight is in my chest and shoulders, my bottom half is fairly narrow and i generally don't have any problems with heavily bolstered sport or racing seats, and generally I do OK with RWD cars that have long, narrow seating areas, as long as there is room for my shoulders. In contrast with my bottom half, my top half is rather broad: roughly 60" chest, I wear a 3 or 4X tall shirt, and almost always the arms are too short, partially because my shoulders tend to stick out past the arm seams and partially because they're longer than normal for my height so I have to get dress shirts custom made (usually 38-39" sleeve), same with my suits, but wear a 38 waist for pants.

How do I fit in other cars:
3rd gen f-bodies- I'm generally OK, but I'm more comfortable with the seat moved back an inch. I can wear a helmet in a t-top car, I have to cut the rails/lower the seats to wear a helmet in a hardtop
4th gen f-bodies- More headroom, less room every other way. Generally I'm OK, but have the seat in my '97 mounted about 1-1/2" further back than stock, could drive it without that but definitely more comfortable that way.
Mustangs- fox mustangs (and other fox chassis cars) are like the f-bodies, the '93-'04 mustangs are a problem the door panels up by the windows come in much further and I just don't fit, I can't drive them without rolling down the windows and putting my arm/shoulder out the window.

So, what do you think? I'm hoping that a tilt/telescoping wheel, maybe with a smaller aftermarket steering wheel if I have to to make things work. I don't know if there is any room for modifying the stock seat rails but if there is...

6'5" 225 lbs age 66 here, back in winter 01-02 I had my '72 vette vert down for about 6 months, some of what I did involved the seating, having the car some 15 years now, the first thing was the TT wheel from a late shark, smaller/later wheel, so the modifications really went wild on that basis...

now I have the leather style, vinyl covers over the OEM stock foam, none of that show car overstuffed crap, reason is the height, I have a extra lo back vertebra so a long backbone, and suffer arthritis...so it hurts my neck getting in/out with top up....the seat tabs in rear were cut off, and the carpeting/padding cut away so the rear tracks set on the floor, directly...
same in front, worth almost 1/2 inch there, the seat back was adjusted to keep it off the rear thwart panel....the steering column was pulled back to me by adding a piece of 3/4 ply between the mounting flange on the firewall, and I managed to keep the two metal spacers on the flange by my knees....

the floor/bulkhead was cut from side to side, the foot dimmer was moved to steering column long since with the column install....so across the bottom, up the sides as far as the steering column, a 2x4 wedged it forward about 3" on the bottom, glassed it in, this allowed the heating/bending of the gas pedal to lower it a couple inches, and cutting the brake pedal lever to lower it a good bit also...one of the later changes was a hydroboost brake booster which is a much shorter pedal throw to full lockup, I never messed with any further pedal lowering....this car used to be a stick shift, so the clutch pedal was cut off, and the brake pedal is the narrow one plenty of foot room for my 13-14 shoes and fucked up feet....

what all that did was lower my knees off the steering wheel, allow me to lean on the center console with my right elbow, and lean way back in the James Dean slouch position...

I also bent the turn signal lever up toward the steering wheel....got it off my left knee....

I greatly prefer the early shark seats with no side bolsters, I guess it's all what you get used to or like, but narrow seats like my '87 vette had did not do me well.....no matter what, those bolsters were a PIA, literally....

obviously this stuff is so subjective, as everyone varies all over the map on ergonomics, but those were MY mods for ME....

You sound a bit like one of my co-workers, he's your height and weight, and we've found that event though we're totally different proportioned, we end up adjusting car seats exactly the same.

Sounds like there is some room for making more room in a c3... Were you able to drive yours before all that? Do the Verts have more or less room with the top up (I did a blower install on a mustang convertible when I was at the speed shop and found that almost undrivable the top took so much extra space). I know that I've been in an early C4 (probably an 84-87 or so, I think it was an early TPI car), but I don't remember if I got the chance to drive it. I do remember that would have been unbearable on a regular bases because my knees and the lower dash were trying to occupy the same space, but I don't remember having any problems with the seats (fiero seats are very similarly proportioned and i'm actually quite comfortable in fieros once I get in them, they happen to have long and large footboxes and the big center console (they had to put the gas tank in them somewhere) left a lot of room for my shoulders).

Gettin in is fine but its the getting out that seem to get me. And I'm allot smaller.

hehe...funny you mention Fiero...I had a '88 Formula...fun car...had that 2.8 tweeked up decent, but I surely knew it was back THERE at 80 in a Florida rain storm....

I was able to drive it ok, did so from Md/DC region to Florida twice, straight through 10.5 hours worth....but as years went by, I had to do something to improve the driveability for me.......my '87 vette was a PIA on the seating....last NON convertible car I ever will buy is that Fiero....I find the sharks are the same with top up, no matter what style it is....the removable hardtop to my car was sold years ago, no need for it in SUNNY Florida...
after 5 years hanging around off the garage ceiling, it was time...

OH, I missed one detail....I removed the seat belt mechanism black plastic cover for more clearance on the seating, it being lowered and all...
I"m not wide in the shoulders like lots of guys, so I really can't say for lots of stuff, except the prez of my old vette club up north was about 260 lbs and only 6' tall, he seemed to enjoy his earlier C4 think it was a '91-92?....
we used to snicker about how in HELL he fit in that thing....

I didn't read your dissertation but I'm 6'1" 200lbs and I fit comfortably. When I installed racing seats I removed the headliners and painted the underside of the t-tops with black satin epoxy primer for more head room.

I didn't read the entire thread either, but I am 6'4" and about 225lbs on a good day. I wear a 36-38 waist, but am not nearly as built up top as you are and I fit perfectly fine. It's not overly roomy feeling, but snug and comfy like a glove.

BTW, this is my 1st post, so HI everyone :hi:
