Isn't a diffuser like a wing above the airdam like a 90-up vette has?

Measuring air flow changes through the radiator after adding splitter and air dam

So the shape of the shroud behind the radiator seems to be most critical in the airflow through it.....interesting....here I keep thinking anything in front, and the sealing.....so IF I try remounting the fans....what would be a proper shape and angle?? maybe to get a stock shroud again, and...

Measuring air flow changes through the radiator after adding splitter and air dam

That's the function of the diffuser volume/area in front of the radiator. It's not efficient to allow the air to just slam into the radiator surface.

That's what I don't quite understand.....if I concept it right, or not.... as applied to a shark....you are saying that adding fairing/duct work to smooth the airflow INTO the rad ?? I realize the grill/lights/body/bumper?/ all add restrictions to the airflow....but I left the backside of my...

Thanks guys, but I don't see how I can get any extra fans under the hood, and aimed out the ducts I have....PIA to mod them to boot.... and the diffusers I dunno how to do them on this car..... I still think to go with reangling the fans and still keep full shroud.... :3rd:

Yeah. I'm no expert, but it appears that the theory is to use the diffuser to spread the air (thereby slowing it down), and the resulting pressure rise from the slowed air will help distribute the air more evenly over the radiator surface. And, I assume, it's more efficient to use the pressure...

Measuring air flow changes through the radiator after adding splitter and air dam

But wouldn't opening up the grills like I did, and putting in tray headlights and eliminating that restriction, and obviously removing license plate gear, but I know I added in two 'driving lights'.....still a overall inrush increase.... so you saying it did almost no good?? :shocking:

Also shown are a jug of PVA mode release and the small gun I use to spray it, a finsihed mold for part of the CF diffuser that goes in front of the radiator, and a can of mold release wax. In the foreground is a partially finished buck for a CF brake cooling inlet...

...sq inches of the actual radiator to catch enough air to cool properly. True or false? I don't know. Mike is that what you are referring to as a diffuser? An opening thats smaller than the radiator to admit air but with increasing volume so as to let the air spread out as it moves to the radiator?

Diffuser?? you can't mean like a a/c cond, can you?? I sent a email to DeWitts about altering my Spals from directly parallel to the radiator, therefore blowing down toward the harm/balancer in same plane as the rad.....to a more upright position, leaving the rad alone....that makes the entire...

...long as it's sufficient in volume/mass to pull out the number of BTUs to cool the engine. My understanding is that it's desirable to have a diffuser ahead of the radiator to convert the high speed/low pressure flow into low speed/high pressure air. This apparently is more efficient at...

...a tube-type roll cage for chassis stiffening. It had a belly pan with a wing built in at the ground-plane; I guess it was an early form of diffuser and would have generated ground effects. IMSA rules didn’t allow it but that was OK because we knew it was going to be a sacrificial element in...

    Making one-off parts?

...techniques. My car has over 100 hand built parts that required one-off fabrication, bucks, and/or molds -- rear fenders, wing, air dam, diffuser, splitter, firewall, belly pan, and dozens of vents and associated ductwork. I usually build a buck out of the most useful material -- 1 inch pine...

Yessss - a great diffuser and belly pan -- another good reason for SIDE PIPES! Probably want to get the ram air out from behing the rear wheels too. Something like the "classic" Ferrari GT350 back in the 60's or the original Grand Sports. Cheers - Jim

C3 front end lift (aero) question.

...engines with open air filter elements. But that's a topic for another thread. :) My main interest is balancing the pressure "vectors" in the diffuser area ahead of the radiator. It seems to me (without actually looking at the car at the moment) that if sufficient air (for cooling) enters the...

Measuring air flow changes through the radiator after adding splitter and air dam

I did quite a bit of research quite a few years ago on shrouds and fans etc and a rule of thumb that sticks in my mind was that for optimum cfm, the shroud should be approx the same distance from the radiator as it’s diameter. Of course that’s not possible in a C3, but the old Monte Carlo and...

C3 front end lift (aero) question.

...at the front bodywork. There's significantly less surface area in the bottom portion in front of the radiator compared to the top. If this diffuser volume is even remotely efficient (at converting air velocity into air pressure), then there's going to be a decent amount of force pushing the...

I'll let you know when -- I know?! I see a couple of issues here -- Cooling - and air flow -- sorta linked... Fans can pull or push through the radiator - DOOH. But where should we send the air after that? And to what -- if any advantage/disadvantage? Here's an interesting link to...

C3 front end lift (aero) question.

...reasonable that this area would contribute to the front end lift. Given that this area (actually, a volume) in front of the radiator is a diffuser, changing high velocity air into pressure (to increase efficiency of airflow through all the radiator fins), the slight pressure gain over a large...

...Starboard is heavy -- even in 1/4 inch, and expensive. How about using some of the window substitue plastics at HD? Light weight - smoked or clear, should be rigid enough for the front end. For the parachute -- You gonna cut the bumper up? Or build an underbelly diffuser? Cheers - Jim
