Brainstorming a vented rear bumper cover

...up in the wheel well. If you have a look at many of the Sports Racers, they are all "open-ended" no parachute at all. Many (including Formulas) have a diffuser too. theory being, get the air out - through the "holes"; control the flow and generate downforce with the diffuser. Cheers - Jim

There should be a honeycomb diffuser in front of the MAF. I think bad things happen whe you remove this.

Brainstorming a vented rear bumper cover

...image is not associated with the test results posted. I only provide as representative of the possibilities. Note the "kick-up" at the rear - a diffuser. Venting the "parachute" would still be useful I'd think. Look closely - you'll see the rear bumper through the wheel well. Cheers - Jim

Brainstorming a vented rear bumper cover

If it weren't for my reluctance to cut up the bodywork/structure I've always wanted to run some "large" ducts from under the car (at the storage compartments or under the seat/footwell areas) upwards towards the astro-vents behind the rear window. This would/should partially fix two problem...

Brainstorming a vented rear bumper cover

...- so need to "face" the open area and have a means to mount tail lights. The Chaparral 2H has a nice look. To avoid a parachute effect - a diffuser of several varieties: That one is pretty radical (but I like -- and will use -- the Diff cooler plan). This a little less so - even though...

Brainstorming a vented rear bumper cover

Interesting thinking. Those duct could be the volume of the arch around the back window. It would take some glassing from the inside. Basically those duct would come from the areas at bodymount #4 and would end at openings in the inside the arch, at each side of the back window. I hope I make...

Brainstorming a vented rear bumper cover

I hated to add weight to my car, but I'm hoping the reduced drag and lift might make up for it. Right now I'm just band-aiding the underside of the car (several cuts and modifications, depending on the changes to the trans crossmember shape and the exhaust system iteration). It certainly would...

    Rear Diffuser Project

Ive been planning to make some kind of rear diffuser for a while now. Got most of my plans together and started yesterday... Heres what Ive got so far: One of the tunnels out of the mold and roughly shaped. Im going to add a few more layers of glass on it still. The rear valance is cut up about...

LED Bubble style C3 tail lights

Hard to take pic of a direct source light accurately. The light pattern is very similar to what I got with my led taillight prototype #2 The pattern was cool, but I ruled them out in this state. Bubble covers were designed for one unique central source light. With the led scattered all...

Drop the tank lowers CG too. :D Build a diffuser with a max of 15-20 degrees up from reference (horizontal). A couple of strakes to add a bit of strength to the piece. Then maybe open the rear "bumper." These ought to big improvement to the "parachute." That's what I'm planning/hoping...

    cutting up my 90 vette

Ohhh - one man's trash could be another man's diffuser. (Or at least a mold for one.) But, then my wife says I keep too much stuff. What's she know - she's only been around 32 years!

    Gedankenexperiment: Rear mounted radiator

...take 90 percent of the JP SUPERVETTE, minus the wide-body Greenwood fenders, add flares instead, and Kamm-back in lieu of the parachute (rubber bumper) with diffuser. My laydown radiator and airbox - has an exit in the hood - cut last weekend - sorry - still "processing the photos". Cheers...

...no details (lift/drag/downforce/velocity/etc)- but what you see. Kevin Cooper has done a lot of research in aero devices, he is an award winner at SAE, and has worked on "near surface (ground) flow." Most recent work appears to be in the area of rear diffusers. Nice splitter too. Cheers - Jim
