Busted my tail shaft. Can I remove the 4-speed from the car with it on jackstands, or do I need it on a hoist?

If I need it on a hoist, looking for a shop between Long Beach and Huntington Beach in SoCal.

Thanks, in advance. George

It can be done on jackstands, and I have done it. Not alot of fun, and you need a second person. That SOB is heavy. While you have it out, have Anaheim Gear go thru it and reseal it. They do 2-3 a week.

I have done it several times,it's not that bad. Just make sure to eat your Wheaties before you are ready to drop it or put it back in.

I remember doing the first removal on the muncie, and so used my 2x6x12" on the floor jack cup....drill a <3/8 hole in the cup, center bolt through 2x6 into the tapped hole in the cup....you now have a good stable platform for the tranny to set on....good for any tranny....

especially if you working alone....:smash::eek:

I think that the Muncie in my 69 only weighed about 50 lbs. I remember that I was really surprised at how light it is.
As far as removing it, I don't know. Mine went in and out with the engine.
I'm pretty close George, so give me a call if you need some help.

It's not half bad on jack stands. Getting it back togeather is harder then pulling apart.

Thanks guys, I might just take it to a shop and not work so hard. Any other strong recomendations for a shop? The car is very nice and I have done most of the work my self but I have very little time.

George

Only up here in Fullerton. PM me if you want details.
J&D Corvettes in Bellflower is another option.
Corvette Mikes and West Coast Corvettes are in Anaheim, but I don't know their work/charges.
Coast Corvettes are crooks. Do not go there.
I can do it in 2 weeks, but you would have to get it here. (I am the cheapest)LOL

Of course most of us, when we start to do something, we start expanding the scope of the project......

If you're going to have someone else do the job, consider having someone section the transmission crossmember, i.e convert it to a removeable crossmember. This makes future tranny work a snap. Also, with a removeable crossmember, you know have a slam dunk option of installing a 5 speed in the future if you want. If you want to go with a removeable crossmember, you can get a lot of help on the forum.

Thanks guys. Took the easy way out and flatbeded the car to a shop down the street to do the R&R. Took a few days to find, but found a tail shaft extension at Anaheim Gear, fair price. Should have the car back tomorrow or Friday.

Best to all, George
