At what point do you guys find it necessary to install a scatter shield? I am getting ready to install a moderately built 383 into my '78 and wonder if it is necessary. I might just go with the non sfi lakewood unit while im saving up for a t56.

I regret that I did not buy the bulletproof bellhousing when I installed my 5spd. I dont think it depends much on the engine, a flywheel and clutch assembly rotating at 6500 rpm is a scary thought... that stuff is right in line with the legs/ankles.....

Anything above stock HP.

I keep thinking that it is smart money spent. I need my feet. Its hard to walk without them. I do eventually plan to go with a t56, so I guess ill be able to sell it later or maybe keep it for another project.

I really just wondered what considerations you guys made since pretty much everyone here speaks through experience.

Thanks!

I actually know a guy who doesn't have a right foot because his flywheel came apart. To me, it's a necessity on any car I drive regularly.

But guys drive automatics pretty much the same way at the drags....

I suppose they use blankets though, but I guess the blankets are not tough enough for a flywheel containment.....

:amazed:

there's a whole lot less rotating mass in an automatic flywheel. Plus, if any of the internal parts go, it has less inertia and mass to fling through the floorboards. I'm not a fan of the blankets because they keep heat in transmissions and, despite seeing several automatics that came apart, haven't seen anything which I'd consider high-probablity-of-injury producing (though it is cool to see the aftermath - but I'm sick that way)

Yep. Back in the day, we had to run blankets. I "think" they have SFI housings for them now.

I understand. But they don't make scattershields for jewelry. Doesn't matter the car, a clutch can blow up.
Maybe this is more your style:

I wish I had pictures of the 1st one I saw (I was maybe 6 years old at the time - so it made quite an impression). The hub detached from the flywheel, then the flywheel went out the driver's side - it looked like someone took a giant nibbler and cut a slot from the tunnel through the running boards (37 Chevrolet Coupe). Of course, there was lots of blood too because his left ankle was the 3rd thing it sawed through

okay the last one did have humor in it (I wonder if the owner can laugh about it yet?) - where the pieces of his car won the race by beating the other car to the end :)

When i put the new motor in my vette a couple of months ago. I added a Hay's SFI flywheel, lake wood scatter shield, and an SFI crank dampener. Not sure what the 409 is putting out at the flywheel, But it's more than the stock L82 put out.
Better safe than sorry.
