I just heard that a carton of cigarettes in NY costs $200 because of taxes! And, apparently cigarette crime is rising at a record rate. People rob stores for their cigs and don't even look in the cash drawer. Others hijack trucks because the cargo can be worth more than 1 million dollars! Looks like cigarettes are more expensive than weed.

So, here is my idea. You know how they have home brewing setups for beer? What if you grew tobacco in your back yard and rolled your own? Anybody know how many plants you would have to grow (for you personal use of course)?

I'm just joking but it is sad that people have been sold a legal product and year by year they have been taxed into poverty. Studies have shown that smokers actually save insurance companies money by dying earlier so the "burden that smokers put on the healthcare system" is not a valid argument for excessive taxes.

By the way, I don't smoke. I'm just appalled that smokers are beat down by just about every government entity out there.

You might have something there. Microbrewery cigs, probably a very lucrative idea.
I just paid $46.00 for a carton, and it goes up again today.
I have been thinking about quitting, and it looks to be soon. $2,600 a year to kill myself is too expensive.

Hmmm you do have something there, I might just convert my farm to growing tobacco, the seed is available from the local co-op's and there is some tobacco farms around here, can't be to hard to grow, the only thing i do not have is the barn to dry it in after harvest. growing corn, soy beans, milo, winter wheat has not profitable lately.

I quit in 2006 and I gained 35lbs since then.... that can't be healthy ???

Depends, how heavy were you to start with? If you weighed 70 lbs that's one thing, if you weighed 270 that's another.

I grow my own for the pipe, cig tabacco is not leaf matter any more. Its the juice and some pulp spread on belts then baked, shreaded to fill cigs. Stronger this way. Still buy cigs pipe for home.

Michael.

I am surrounded by tobacco fields. In the spring there is a hoard of "temporary" workers brought in to plant the tobacco and then a hoard of "temporary" workers to harvest it in the fall.

I think you can grow it as far north a Canada.

I grew was born and raised in Rockingham, NC, and I WILL NEVER PICK DAMN TOBBACCO AGAIN, EVER.
My hands were a mess when I was a young man of 16-17, Then I got smart, painted houses, cut grass, worked in the movie theather, all them cleaner jobs. We picked acres of that crap, good Lord have mercy if I ever have to pick that crap again.
Would like to have the money for black marketing cigs now, good money!!!!

You know i grow my own also,oh wait you are talking about tobacco :flash:

Up where my farm is located, there use to be a lot of Hemp farms way back when, and that stuff still grows wild everywhere, the seeds are spread by the wildlife,we call it ditch weed, well because the ditch's are just full of it come summer time, and at night you can always tell when it's around it has it's own smell kinda stinks. It comes in handy when we burn the fields off,you can get down wind an ease the tension

Would that be the reason , the plowed rows look like a drunk snake???

Some years ago a small group of "Gentlemen" decided they were going to build themselves a little business importing cigarettes into KC. They were "advised" not to do that by some other "Gentlemen" with surnames that ended with vowels. The first group did the import thing anyway for about 2 months. Ended badly for them. Same with produce into KC. You don't get very far.
