How about an engineer running GM? Someone who knows something about cars.
Thats the way we used to do it 30 years ago. A technical person running a technical company.

It takes many different skills to run an organization. I do know what you mean. I think the bean-counters at the top of many corps. screw things up. But I worked with ME's and EE's that had absolutely no common sense. Same guys that bring me their 'Vette for a "no-start" problem when it's simply out of gas. Most engineering types can design anything you want....but they don't give a shit about what it looks like or how much it costs. That is where management comes in to play.
P.S. Many years ago when I was working in electronics, I worked for a company that made word processors (1976-1980). About that time a Xerox engineer designed a G.U.I...(Graphic User Interface). His company said who needs it?. Xerox sold the technology to I.B.M. Ever hear of the Personal Computer? The I.B.M. PC was directly based on the original Xerox design. I.B.M.'s management had the vision the engineers at Xerox lacked.

No Obama is not the answer. But we DO live in a 'global community' now, and the perceptions of the world beyond our borders will make a huge difference in the future of America & American lives. You must go OUTSIDE America to fully grasp what is happening here, now. How can you understand anything from only one narrow veiwpoint? You can't devise an improvement for a machine if you only have a 1 degree veiw of it--You need to look at it from 360 by 360 degrees and then learn how it interacts with all the other machines on the line before you can improve on its performance for the overall good of the product.
McCain is percieved as being too emotional, untrustworthy if you will, in that he makes snap decisions and then later tries to make excuses and backpedal. His temper controls him, and it is---tempermental. He also is percieved as having sold out to big business interests--yes, years ago he was a "hero " and all that. That was then, this is now. He's become a tool of the corporatocracy, in it only for his own grandeur & power. He's on the payroll of those who are behind the scenes, who stay out of the spotlight, and who will never ever face an enditement, or dismiss it with a wave of the hand if one should ever happen to reach their desk.
Obama is seen as one who has a broader vision of the world. It is understood that his presidency would be crippled and ineffective due to interferance from the powers in charge & political opponents, but yet even a perception that the entire American populace is not infected & insane with the bloodlust of world domination of the current administration, will do very much to help regain some trust & respect for the ideals that America once stood for, before the corporatocracy gained so much influence. If at least he is willing to talk, to listen, to think about other veiwpoints, rather than just attack them, the 90% of the world in which we do NOT live might be more flexible and willing to listen to us. Our influence & power over, and respect from, the rest of the world is diminishing rapidly, like it or not.
"America" as an idealogy, is still the most desired place to be for most of the world's population. But "Amerika" the Christian fundamentalist corporatist politically blind military superpower, which is all many of the "main street" citizens of millions of "small towns" across the world have personally experienced in the last decade or so, is feared & reviled.
What is the point of being the most powerful man in town if everybody hates you? As long as the peasants deliver your food, champagne & ice and you keep the doors locked & the grounds patroled with dogs, I guess it's not a bad life. Your pals can drop in by helicopter and discuss the problems of dealing with those ding dang proles who dare think they should have a life other than what you dictate, and as you eat your tender dinner steak & sip your wine, you can turn away from the window overlooking the town below where the smoke is starting to rise and turn up the music to drown out the sound of a million voices rising.....

Look up South America, Indonesia, even Africa and the "revolutions" of the '80s & 90s. Look deeper than just the first 2 or 3 google entries you see. Look into the "dissappeared" persons in Argentina, Chile, Peru, Ecuador. Look into the reasons for the rising of the drug lords & the cocaine trade from Columbia & Bolivia. Look into the reasons for Hugo Chavez's popularity in Latin America. Don't just do peripheral searches, dig, dig. You will become amazed & incensed.

Turtle, you have so much smarts in troubleshooting mechanical systems. This is no different. If a motor runs wild on an assembly line due to a short circuit sending it 480 instead of the 240 volts it was meant to run on, do you cure the problem by destroying the entire line? No you find out where the problem is and you go after that. In this case, the problem is deliberately caused by the power company who want the factory to fail so they can close it down, fire the workers, buy it back for penneys on the dollar and then hire new workers to run it at half the wages of the old crew.

Have you read "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" by T. E. Lawrence? (""Lawrence of Arabia"") It gives so much insight into how the Arabian area of the world works--and as Westerners, we did not know or understand that, and still don't. He wrote it in 1926. It still is a topical book, "people in power" should read it. It is a good read too, he's a good writer.
