Man those things are restrictive and they make even a healthy 502 sound like a souped up VW beetle.

The diameter of the muffler is about the same or even smaller as a primary. That won't do at all.

What to do? Well, fab something up I guess. Same idea as on the 77 sbc car I fabbed these up for the 502. A little more muffler area, all stainless including the wool. EAsy to install and remove (hence the flat strip of metal to pull them out)

Perforated tube and reducer cones.

Some quick cutting and bending...et voila. Whipped up in a jiffy

I'll have a new clip asap.

Nice car, I'm interested to hear the new mufflers.

i bought mine without inserts for that reason. i bought 2 1/2 sweet thunder insert they sound good, but i have thought of doing like you did.

The ones in the 77 sound awesome. These will probably be even better because of the bbc

Looks good! I think Danny Popp did something similar on his Vette. He said the spiral inserts are restrictive. I was kinda surprised to hear that.

Edit: I found Danny's quote, "I was using spiral mufflers in the side pipes, and they are ALL restrictive. I had a custom set of 3" purforated tube mufflers made that are wrapped in steel wool. They work MUCH better and the noise is about the same as the spirals. Yes, it is loud, but believe it or not, without the mufflers it is MUCH louder and more piercing. In order to have power in a side pipe muffler , it is going to be loud. There is not enough capacity to balance noise and make power in a 4"side pipe tube. But I love side pipes, so........I picked up 7-8 mph at the dragstrip with the new mufflers"

IMO My brothers 77 does sound better than the 502 somehow, it has a similar setup but the inserts are a lot shorter

Hooker Max Flow Mufflers

I was the Hooker Exhaust Design Engineer from 200-2005, and you are all correct, the original mufflers wouldn't flow a bit. We tested a 427 BBC with the side pipes and lost tons of power. I developed the Max Flow insert that is basically the same as your design but a cartridge with 2 1/2" diameter perf core muffler. Helped tremendously! I just looked up the part number 21046HKR

Side mount header muffs

Sound great! Where did you get the material to make the mufflers?

Not sure how many guys here run at Lime Rock. They have an 86 dB noise restriction. I currently have C3 with hooker side pipe headers with max flow inserts. The car is loud.

I called Borla, and spoke to Dave Borla. I also spoke to Ryan Baker
Customer Service Specialist ([email protected]) at 805.246.6073.

We went through the spec on a number of mufflers and came to the conclusion that the Borla 400115 XR-1 Multi-Core racing muffler would give me my best chance at meeting the sound requirements. This muffler is usually used on racing trucks and is almost as big as a side pipe. 34"X8.5"X5.5". Initially I was a bit concerned with the step down from the 4" collector to the 3" muffler opening. However, if you pull a side pipe and look down the tube, the most free flowing Hooker Max Flow is about a 2" opening. Having said that, this muffler may very well make MORE horsepower than the Hooker Max Flow and tons more than their "quiet muffler" inserts that have a 1" opening.

Another big piece to this is the outlet of the exhaust. Borla makes turndown/turnout outlet (part # 20146) that will allow me to rotate the tip. I believe racervette69 had posted a great picture of this. But I guess it was deleted. If the tip is not pointed directly at the meter, I have a better chance of passing.

I received the 4" outlets and the mufflers should arrive soon. After all the fabrication is done, I'll let you guys know how it turned out.

Mufflers for side mount headers

Where did you get the materials to make the mufflers? I like to use that setup for my car.:search:

Curious 84rzv500r do you happen to run at sound restricted road courses? What is your decibel limit? That is very similar to what I am doing. Except you chose a dynomax ultraflow muffler and I chose the XR-1® Multi-Core Pre-Runner 3" Center-Center 34"x8.5"x5.5" – (Racing Muffler part # 400115). Your engine is much bigger that mine at 502. I have a small block.

I can't run the car if they will not let you me track due to noise.

BTW: Love those side pipe covers. If I may ask where you purchased them and do they keep you from burning you legs.

I buy my stainless in germany on ebay. You can find stainless perforated tube on ebay, stainless wool also. Then all you need is 2 stainless cone reducers.
