I started out as a Draftsman where the rule was never to use the end of the scale for a measurement, always use the 1" mark. It's a habit that I cant break to this day. Even with a tape measure.

My guess is that forging for a part like a crankshaft has gone to China long ago, when we purged our capability to make basic, heavy industry products. I suppose there are China forged products that are machined here. And maybe some specialty forgings for high value industries like Aerospace.

I have been trying to lighten the load in my old age. Large/heavy things first. I can't believe the crap I have accumulated.

Not sure this is universally true but a cast crank should have a small parting line and cast in numbers and a forged will have a wide parting line and stamped numbers. I'm surprised there are any US forged cranks these days.
