alternator mounts

i finished the late model cs mounting and rewireing on my 71. the cs alternator came off a cadillac suv and is a 140 amp version that is large by huge. i have not checked hood clearance yet but it looks to be very close. my vett did not have the stock alternator mounts on it,so i had to fab my own. i can have the stock alternator built for 100 amp service, and i'm having second thoughts about removing the cs and adaptor harness and going with the stock alternator with a 100 amp rebuild. i need the extra power for the twin rad. fans. my question is what alternator mounts would i need to buy to work with headers and look very neat. this is a small block. thanks

My '72 has dual spals, and a '88 vette serp drive, the mounts are not any issue, as the alt is a 17SI, trick is the 17 is larger diameter than stock 10-12 units....

but same size as the CS144....so it really should clear....even with stock V belt drive....check it with loosely packed tinfoil on top, shut hood and check clearances....clay would work too, but harder to find....

my 17SI is rated 108 amps.....

I used a CS144 on my class C motor home...

thank you for the reply.

C'mon Gene, clay is not hard to find- It's just called Playdoh in the toys at wally world. Lots of different colors too.

tinfoil hats and such in the kitchen cab.....CLAY is the name of the county I live in, not that we HAVE any.....

The other tricks....

Look for the smallest pulley for the alternator....The tuners have all these larger pulleys for their alternator to "get more" HP...but it sort of a moot point when your mostly going to be at idle when the fans are running- and the alternator is making the least amount of power.

BIG wire- from the Alt to the battery ( or starter terminal)- you can keep your wimpy stock wiring harness AND run the larger wire - only issue is the amp meter will not read correctly (does it ever?)---they suck compared to a voltmeter anyway.

OR you could go w/ a bunch of small alternators rather than one big one....

custom mounts

I had std Hooker alt mtg brkt but needed to move the alt down 1 inch and in toward the centerline 1 inch to solve some clearance issues with a new PS pump. Made this up in stainless. Did the job.

Shit, even I knew at age 12 or so, back around '56 or so when the car companies went from 6>12 volts, that they should have gone .mil spec at least nominal 24 volt for bat power, etc......

48 is more like it actually, less wire used, same or superior power....

That is some seriously crazy shit! Drugs must have had some doing in that concept. Now mount some superchargers like that and then it would be smokin!

Yes it is...I was in "that" industry from the early 80's through the 90's...

Here's one of my first "stereo systems" in the early eighties...

HOWEVER- I only ran two alternators at the time- I pulled off my air pump (78 BMW 320i) and had two Bosch 85 AMP alternators...running twin batteries and I think 4 runs of 4gu wire...

Big Bird-

I respectfully disagree w/ you regarding running multiple alternators... Heat is a BIG problem and limits the ability of the Alt to make the power.

When I was in the car stereo industry there was a guy modding alternators and putting the rectifiers remotely - In just doing this one mod the Alt output increased 25+ %.

BMW actually puts two alternators on it's V12 cars it sell to Japan- the vehicles are sitting in traffic a lot and it helps when the car is idling...running the electric fans...
In the later V12's they used WATER COOLED alternators...

What keeps those internal regulators from talking to each other???

I sort of look at them as a 'gain rider'....and if two+ alts are looking at the same 12 volt system, wouldn't they go to talking, meaning charge voltage going up/down??

thanks grampy. i to had the clearance problems with this cs because it was so large and hit the valve cover and i had to make the brackets from scratch.i will have the stock alternator rebuilt with 100 amp internals and be ready if the brackets or cs take a dump on me. this cs was just big enough to cause problems, but it was in the garage for a couple years and i was going to use it no matter what.
