Reposition the e-brake bracket

I'm in the process of rebuilding the e-brake and was going to reposition the bracket on the trailing arm while I'm at it. I'm not sure at this point where to position it on the top of the arm. I stole a picture from "Fuelie74" (hope you don't mind) and was wondering if this is the approximate location and angle? Does anyone have more specifics?

I moved mine behind the rotor, and kept the shroud routing in similar position, moving the frame mount outboard to the rails for the shroud length....
but that was all 15 years ago, before the mods became popular, since then guys have managed to do what I could not, find a top spot that worked, it never seemed to work out when I tried it....YMMV...but it would be a better location in that I had to use a spring to hold the shroud out of the way from the tire...tied to the shock mount...

:gurney:

When I did mine I just measured the distance from one bracket to the other and mounted then new bracket the same distance.

Tough test for my undocumented visual recall...but on my '72 it seems I tried that, and somehow something did not work well, I don't remember just what....I remember clamping the bracket, maybe just tack welding it....and trying the suspension under full flex...all sorts of tests including angle of the cable around obstructions/corners/shroud ends.....but I can't quote all the problems...just my solution that is self evident enough over 15 years...sorry...:twitch::confused2::lol:

Thanks for all the comments everyone, other then trial and error I still welcome comment on the proper location for the bracket. What seems to be consistent is that the bracket should be installed at an angle.

The link you provided leads to "VetteMOD Technical Discussion" which has 10 headings. Am I to understand that there is some info somewhere in one of those sections?

PS if your cable is old & stretched, you may want to mount the bracket back (toward the front of the car) just a little bit farther, I'd say 1/4" max, to take up some of the adjustment slop.

Thanks for the new link JPhil, the cables just to clarify and this is your quote below, oh and thanks. By the way, I should be trying this in about 2 weeks.

"Mount them on the top, pointing to the cable support. You'll need to bend one ear of the bracket in about 1/4" to fit on the t-arm at that angle. (You may want to trim that ear a little shorter so the fitting on the cable housing will clear it, & don't tweek the face while bending the ear.) Locate it with the corner of the bracket which is closest to the hub directly above the edge of the brake hose bracket. Weld the side ears only, a bead on the front will not allow the mickey mouse clip to seat completely. Don't tip it back too much or the cable housing may bind on the t-arm."

I have just relocated the bracket. I will take you some pics when I do the test for the whole movement of the trailing arm. I will show the pics in case the location is correct...

The bracket is in angle so that the line from the bracket to the small bracket for the cable only is as straight as possible. This is to make the movement of the cable as smooth as possible. I have already noticed that the cable is leaning pretty heavily to the trailing arm on the inside of the arm.

Any updated photo's Finnshark?

Dam, I forgot the whole thing. Good that you reminded me! Yep, I have a pic, not very good though, but here it is.

Maybe this helps though. The position is pretty much the same as it is originally, I mean that the length from the front bushing to bracket is about the same. I jacked the rear through the whole travel. Position of the bracket is OK. The cable is leaning qute hard against the trailing arm, but it should be OK.

Hopefully this will help you!

Yes it does help and sorry if put undue pressure on you to come through.

As for the bracket, it looks as though it's pretty well in line with the arm but I thought most stated that the angled it slightly inward? Seems as though it wasn't necessary in your case?

EDIT:
Is it the angle of the picture or is the whole rotor painted black, even the area where the pads make contact?

The e-brake bracket is slightly tilted, the pic just doesn't show that very well. It is positioned so that the cable has a straight line towards the cable attachment arm close to the rotor.

Yes, the whole rotor is painted, but very slightly. I have old pads still in and the paint will rub itself off in the first braking. It is not powder paint or anything thick, it's just a thin layer of heat resistant spray. No problems getting it rubbed off in braking. I have done this many times previously. I don't recommend it to any thick paint though, no way for powder coating or por15 for example!
