These are some pic's of my old 1963 Split window Corvette that Don Yenko / John Bushell drove at Daytona and Sebring. Although they never really did much, Ken DuClous drove her and she was known as the Golden Goose. Beat the pant's off of nearly everything in the north east SCCA regions. What was really cool, this Corvette was most likely the first racing Corvette to have a factory Big Block installed, and for sure the first to race the NASSAU w/ a big bock and WIN the governor's trophy race. It also set many track records at Limerock Park.
Well anyway, enjoy the pic's. The new owner Larry Sach's has done a WAY behond Super renovation of the 03070. Me? I' liked her w/tire rubber all over her and a few battle scars, LOL.
Enjoy

Thanks, for sharing, really cool. Great pics :thumbs::thumbs:

I think Dr. Dick Thompson is still alive, and living here in Florida....the question is, does he remember one of my best old friends name.....Larry Hubert....went with Dick to Sebring in '65? I think he said....Larry was a patient of his, dental work....

at one time Larry sent me some stuff about some of his history there....but I dunno where it is....

I should ask for to resend it, and post it here for archives....

That's how Larry and I met, over my '60 vette and some chance encounters of very strange and dubious circumstances.....tales like a mystery news show on TV would tell.....

:twitch::eek:

Yes Dr. Dick is still alive. Was just inducted into Corvette Hall of fame this past December. Looks good, ton of stories. he and Yenko were the two driver's to beat for sure. Both drove for Grady Davis "Gulf Oil" car's.
In fact, Dick Thompson's White w/ blue skunk stripe, Z06 car Number 1 just sold a Mecum Auction for 850K. My Daytona blue that Yenko drove, also sold at that same price but at Barett Jackson.

Damn it sure was fun, and so little to work with

Thses were great days of fun for sure. Day's of a coat hanger could be the difference between finishing a race or not.
I even remember when 003 grand sport then driven by Roger Penski and Delmo Johnson, when at Sebring racing, a rear half shaft universal went on the 003. Delmo saw a new 63 split window coupe in the parking behind the pit wall, and over the crew went and "borrowed" LOL, the universal from the parked vette. True story.

I like them with battle scars too but Larry Sachs (aka Fudgie) is an art collector not a racer...

man ain't that the truth, LOL. He nearly always chokes whenever I tell him to race the car>
It was never intended to be a trophy woosy spit and shine car. GO GET SOME TRACK RUBBER on her., He about dies, LOL.

Larry Sachs has plenty of money to play with Corvettes and stamps (he`s a philatelic, look it up you`ll get a BIG kick out of it`s meaning) but no balls to race...although he did tell me about a big named Corvette restorer from Long Island NY who almost crapped his pants when he took a race car out for a lap....

Enjoyed your pictures, great car. Thanks for sharing it.

Everyone has forgotten how club racers really looked in the 60's and 70's. Patch here, patch there. Primer here, there. Some looked good from 25 feet away, lol.

Howard, was that primer on your car?

Hi guy's , this is really fun when it comes to these Corvettes and what they true were and are today. Lord only know's what fun Zora had back then and what I know he'd say today. He and I were very very close.
Hell just look at this picture you've posted of the two corvettes havin a blast out there. Where was it taken? the Glen maybe?
Remeinds me of Craig Carter and I and his brother Daryl at the Glen and Lime Rock, MANY moons ago.

the big shot restorer you refer to from long island would be Kevin McCay, Have spoke with him a couple times. He is good, VERY good. I believe form everyone I've ever spoke to, he know's he's very good too, LOL. Strap his butt into the 5 point harness, and like Sach's, he'll be polishing more than the seat of the race car, LOL.

I hosted the very first Grand Sport Corvette Reunion in Sebring Oct 1978. Had Zora there, Dave McCellen, Oshod Torosion, Walt Zetye,Gib Hustader, John Gibson, and Fred price and myself of engineering. Had also Jon Thorne of Valdasta with his beautiful 002 Grandsport, Bob Paterson all the way from California with his Mecom 003 GrandSport, and Bob Adam's from Ormand Beach with his 004 Mule as we refered to it in Engineering. I found the 004 after it was believed that she was crushed at Warren, Tech Cntr.
Dick & Willie Guldstrand, George Winterstein, and 1500 other Corvette folks who'd only ever read or seen pic's at the time, of the GS car's, now reunited with their engineering team. WHAT a Blast. Zora with his lucky strike's, and a Martini' in the othe hadn needless to say, his Beautiful Elfi there siting beside him with her Martini (DRY) of course.
Man we took these priceless GS's over to Sebring, unloaded, and all Hell broke lose. These GS's hadn't seen that track or one anothe for God only know's but some 15 year's prior. WHAT a blast. Not like today's woosie's, LOL. Yeah I said Woosie's. LOL

.

No, Its Road America.....
and here is one for you Tommy...a car originally built by Ralph Eckler & Denny Long (yea that Ralph Eckler), later Denny went on to race a Greenwood customer car sponsored by Bandag, this car is now red without flares and raced in the SVRA by Don Henry. When the C-3 got the big back window and the SCCA allowed the "wide" front end I rebodied it as this...most hated the paint but in the right light it was pretty cool...

Luv the pic man. Know Ralph and his brother Bobby. Rich Kramer all the old gang from year's and years ago. Ralph's Corvette racer. How bout that. Thanks for sharing .

And the colors, don't look all that bad either,

Hey any of you fella remember Larry VanScoy? Ran the fat bodied red Corvette? Good friend of mine. Will have to bring him on over here. He'll have some great stores and pic's too.
