Not sure what's the best sub-forum to stick this in ....

A friend of mine asked me to listen to his son's car, a 2003 focus.... Doesn't really matter what year/make/model.... Anyways: that engine sounded so friggin scary, it's unbelievable..... I have been working and messing with engines for over 25 years and this one I was convinced to blow up within the next 500 miles, that's how bad the knocking noise was...... Really !!!

I told him to look for used engines......

Two weeks later he called me and said that engine puked water/coolant all over the place.....

I found it threw the serpentine belt and the water pump pulley was wobbly.....

Turned out the water pump bearing was shot, with a new water pump, new belt and new tensioner the engine runs and sounds like brand new.....

Bottom line: do not underestimate what kind of noise a water pump can make.....

I'm surprised that he didn't blow a head gasket. You guys got lucky!

I had a similar issue with a loose fan on my water pump - made dreadful noises that sounded like a knock. I tightened up the four little bolts and voila - no more knocking.

Twin cam engine?? or single?? Wife used to have a '99 Escort, single cam engine, which is famous for eating the #4intake valve seat, and destroying the engine, happened to her at speed coming off the freeway ramp, rod through side of the cylinder wall...I put another engine in it and had the 'new' head reworked to grenade proof specs.....she got hit at 45 mph in traffic, and car was totalled ......So now she has a '01 Focus with the twin cam engine, I had to do the water pump and the alternator on it, and it takes about a can/year of freon in the a/c I not going to go ape shit trying to find that leak....

Twin cam 2.0 I believe, AC evaporator was leaking two years ago, freon smell inside the car...... Pain in the a$$ to pull that heater box with the evaporator..... Might be one of the 2015 projects

To replace the water pump I had to remove the engine mount on the pass side and lower the engine.... Sound familiar ????? ....
