Xander has Hooker side pipes on his car but all the muffler inserts suck IMO, they are restrictive and sound like crap....I'm not liking the spiral baffles either so...what to do. There's only one answer of course! Fab something ourselves.

I started off with some 4" (a little larger actually) pipe and cut a section out and used large band clamps to pull it to a smaller diameter and then welded it together again and hammered th seam flat. This way the end caps fit tight into the side tubes. I also welded some stainless all thread in there (didn't have smooth stainless rod anymore...and no one will see it anyway) so I can use that to pull the inserts out if need be.

The perforated tubing is also stainless stuff, the packing is stainless wool. Don't have pics of the packing though.

Sounds pretty good if you ask me :)

It is that simple to make good sounding mufflers ? OK, it is not simple for the average joe .... but you sure make it look simple.
Good job, I've always wanted sidepipes and I will print your photos and see if a local shop can make me something similar.
Thanks for sharing this with all of us.

Michel, it's a milodon gear drive.

Arthur, these are so easy to fab up, I had no idea what they would sound like but being nothing more than a set of glasspack/bullet type mufflers flipped inside out I was certain they would sound alright.

OK, I can go that, questions are, how HOT does it get, still a leg burner??

and how is that damn resonance at say 1800 rpm, going up hill???

I don't mind a good solid basso profundo sound, just that damn resonance any free flowing exhaust has, that I know of anyway....

wonder if two of them would kill the resonance ....

I would rather have side pipes than what I have now...in fact, run the tubes out the sides of the fenders the way the show car was....

just don't burn ME or WIFE's ankles gettin outta the thing....

:devil::cussing:

No idea, car can not be driven yet, no seats and needs to pass inspection to get a license plate.... and up hill? Where?? :bonkers:

Probably will, it's loud....just how we like it here :D

I dont know, if it's a day to day car I want it comfy and not too loud.
If it's a toy I'll play with once in a while (like week ends or days off) , I want it as loud and obnoxious as possible.

As for the leg burner? well I have a few heat tattoos from bikes on my legs allready.

I know she can do that too (sweetie to...) but she has her car a 95 Mustang GT nice ride quiet (well like a a GT I suppose) air cond, all that comfy stuff and no tattoo makin mufflers.

My cars on the other hand are usually a bit more brutal LOL.
No air cond, used to get the pipes out in front of the rear tires, loud lots of rattle inside. radio?? what radio?

You know you guys, I should have posted before about this. I have had Hooker side pipes on my car for years and most of my ladies, daughters etc, have the tattoo as well. So last year I smartened up and made some simple covers out of stainless. They work great. With my infra red thermometer I check the side tube itself - I foreget - really hot, on my baffles 95deg f.. on the hottest day. You can touch them. No more burns. If anyone is interested in pics I can take some and post them. I really like my sts baffles, don't know what they would be like if I made any real power tho. Funny thing, my wife has a '95 Mustang gt too :)

YES, I would be highly interested....

MY idea for some time has been to get two of those thrush type bullet mufflers in series for each side, cut the ends off as necessary, weld them together straight plumb them into the headers, and so it's a single 2.5 inch pipe into the muffs.....stick a chrome turn out on the end, but then the problem with the HEAT......something home made and looks good fills that bill....

Got any pictures?

weel in the old day's....remember now, everything for me is,

Everything for me is the old day's.
But first encounter with loud exhaust was Lime Rock, and then shortly after, Watkins Glen.
Had my 69 L88 w/ Kustoms tunnel tubes, No muffler's. Got to Lime Rock and teck failed me. Said Boy, you gotta have muffler's in them pipes.
drove back to my entry spot, and Craig car and I both with failed car's for tech due to muffler's.or restrictor's I believe it was deemed.
So, we headed to a local parts NAPA store, bought a couple spin on oil filter's, Punched a hundred or so holes in the side's of the oil filter's, poured a cup or so of gas in them and set them on fire to burn and gut the filter's out.
Slid them down the pipes, and headed back to tech. Passed the car's. and that was that.
rattled like hell, did restrick terribly, but did the job. Never did buy muffler's, but did buy quite a few oil filter's, LOL.

The spiral baffles produce big hp on a big block motor. The question is, what kind of power will your fab inserts produce? It's all about the power. Send me a pair for Stahl sidepipes and I will dyno them. They don't look very restrictive. Either that or stop posting up your corvette porn.

Can you get us some pics of the packing? Did you just pack the stainless steel tube until it was full?

I'm planning on running my vette with open headers for the first couple of weeks, but I know it isn't going to last - its just going to be too loud for the street. I'll need to make a set of mufflers eventually...maybe I'll make some spiral baffles in the future.

I don't have pics of the packing. It's just stainless wool and it's a sort of wide tape. I fixed it in place with stainless wire locking wire and wrapped it around and kept binding the stuff down with the wirelock and building up layers until it was so thick, it just fit inside the tube without shifting. The wirelocking keeps it from shifting too.

The spiral baffles are not easy to fabricate with the number of spirals you'll need. You need to either have some cut or you'll be hole sawing all day and bending and welding in place.

I've got resources - my uncle is a welder, and has lots of connections.
