Well, it is not always possible, the simplest is to reinstall those programs.
During installation, every program install shared libraries (DLL files), registry settings and all sort of special things like directories....
It all depends of the software. If it is a simple one, just copying the program directory from one "program files" directory to an other should do the trick, but you'll still have to make you own shortcut cause it won't automagically appears in the program section of you start menu.
For the other is could implying copying DLL from the system32 directory of the source PC to the target, with possible incompabilities.
Frankly it's not worth the hassle.
If the software is leggit you still have the installation CD, reinstall.
If the software is not leggit, well, download it again, et re-crack it.
If you post a list of those software, it should be easier to determine what and how.
If it's about transfering personal datas, I google out this

Looks like it would do the job.

I'm with denpo on the swap. Moving the software is not worth the hassle. Probably have to edit the registry which is a major pita and potential disaster if you don't know what you are doing. Best to re-install the software on the new machine and then move your data files over.

Which version of Windows 7 (32 bit or 64 bit)? If 32 bit, your older software should install and run fine. If 64 bit, your 6+ year old software is not likely to be 64 bit compatible and you might have to upgrade. Be worth trying first though. Microsoft has a Windows 7 upgrade site that lists software that is compatible with the 64 bit version. A quick web search might help as well.

If you're happy with xp, then you can image the old hardrive and put it on the Dell. Before trying to boot, run a "repair install" with your original xp discs. Xp will run a lot faster with the ram win7 needs. If the Dell has the two hidden restore partitions, you will want to make cd or dvd images of them or image that hardrive first so you don't loose your legal copy of Win 7

Or
You can download this, a full bootable xpsp3 called xp Mode.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/vir.../download.aspx

This gives you a virtual xp machine. You make the virtual disk disk from your existing xp computor.
You can then mount the virtual hard disk on the win7 system and run it from Win7

Or
Contact this guy and see if he'll send you a copy of pcmover, supposedly the only software that will move the programs to a win machine.

I decided to stay with xp since it works flawlessly for me and does everything I want fast enough. Way too many programs to jack with.

If you want to run Win7, it would still be easier to do a complete fresh install of everything and all your progs sshould work in at least compatability mode.

One good bit of info is that you can use MS VHD as a "free" image backup software instead of Ghost or Truimage.
