I have been looking for the problem of my steering slop. Today by accident I think I located the culprit. Should the control valve stud at the Pitman Arm move before the wheels move. Manually rotating the steering column, the steering linkage does not move when the steering box is moved. There is at least a 1/8 rotation on the steering column, before the front wheels start to rotate.

Should the Control Valve Adapter stud that bolts to the Pitman arm move side to side before the wheels turn? I checked the torque on the nut and it appears to be tight, and pulled up on the taper.

Help

With the engine on the movement in the control valve will be a lot less when you steer.

Thanks Jim,

I was reading all of your papers. I'm glad you responded to point me in the right direction. I thought maybe I found out why the was so much play in my steering. If I turn the coupling by hand, the Pitman arm responds as it should. I guess I will put it back on the alignment rack next week to look at everything else.

Thanks!
