hole spacing

Silly question here,

I have no artistry in my soul, I am pure technician.

When drilling lightening holes in material, in my case a 1/2" wide rear window strap, is there some formulae or guide to make it pretty as well as functional?

I can drill all day long but every now and then you find one that just looks right, eh?
