So my painter let me take over with his gun after giving me some pointers. And now... I'm thinking about shooting the car myself. I'd love to be able to say "I did that, ALL of it." Any advice? Tips? Warnings? Am I just an idiot? I think I'll practice with some cheap one stage paint on my surfboard, see how it looks.

Looks great so far. :1st:

I have never owned a paint gun in my life before I painted the '79. I don't think my paint is flawless but for my first ever paintjob (without a booth) it's pretty good.

By the time you're done shooting primer you will have a good feel for the gun.

Find an old dented fender or surfboard to practice base/clear on - anything will do..... even a trashcan... (done that).....

Take the wheels off the car when you paint - you won't believe how much spray/dust can get behind the wheel. Primer is not all that bad, pretty much no overspray at all.... when you spray base/clear get the car on jackstands as high as possible (16") so you can get the lower areas (your air hose might restrict your access, get a 90 degree swivel for the connection at the gun).

Newspaper: base coat (and the reducer) will penetrate that paper - done that..... three layers of newspaper are sufficient, one layer is not.....

Your first picture shows you wearing a decent mask. Wise choice. I painted my '69 a long time ago when I was young and stupid. All I wore was a dust mask. I'm not sure which came out with a better coat of blue; the Corvette, or my nose and lungs. I was sneezing up blue snot for quite a while after that. I'm a lot smarter now. LOL

I'm the one in the red, 3rd pic down. I'm wearing the gray mask with the red, white, and blue strap, is that mask okay?
